湿度 4月28日 humidity -April 28-

In Japan, the humidity becomes quite low in most areas during winter,
it increases in spring and even more as it gets hotter.

But it seems that this doesn't apply here.
Since Takayama is surrounded by snow all winter,
the humidity remains high.

However, in the past few days,
I felt my lips and hands getting dry
just like what happens at the beginning of
winter every year and I was wondering why.

Several days later, I found out that
a "fire warning" was issued
by the city due to the low humidity.

In fact, the relative humidity was only
28% at around 1pm today (April 28).
No wonder my skins feel so dry　：（

国内の多くの地域では
冬の間は湿度が比較的低く、
気温が上昇するにつれ、高くなっていきます。

しかし、高山では少し違っているようです。
降雪の多い高山の冬は湿度が
高いのです。

ここ何日か前から
唇や肌がひどく乾燥し始めました。
いつもだと、この時期ではなく
冬の始めになるイメージです。

天気予報を見ると
なんと本日（4月28日）午後1時の湿度が
２８パーセントしかありませんでした。
そして、高山市内では、
「火災警報」が発令されていました。

肌がカサカサになるわけです　：（

飛騨産の野菜3 homegrown vegetables of Hida 3

These are what we can get at the local supermarkets now.
They are vegetables just picked from the gardens!!

We often eat komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach)
but it was my very first time to see
"young komatsuna" with its flowers.

Similar to orina, they're a little bitter
but matches perfectly with anything,
such as
olive oil & garlic,
soy sauce & sesame
mayonnaise & mustard!!

We have all kinds of these young & freshly picked vegeables
on our meal table these days.

最近、こんな野菜たちをよく見かけます。
摘みたての野菜です。

「小松菜」はよく食べる野菜ですが、
まだ若い、花芽までついた小松菜は
初めてみました！！

先日お話した折り菜とよく似ていて
少し苦味のある野菜です。
ガーリックオリーブオイル、
醤油＆ごま
辛子マヨネーズ
どのようにいただいてもウマイ！！

最近の食卓には必ずこれらの野菜たちが
テーブルに並んでいます♪

あちこちで写真を撮ってきましたので

美しい建物や橋と美しい桜
他には何もいりません。

心地よい風と暖かな日差し
やはり今がベストシーズンなのでしょうね。
それとももっといい時があるのかな。

折り菜？ "orina?"

What I'm writing today is
a bit difficult to translate into English.
But I'll do my best!!

After spending the looooong winter here in Takayama,
homegrown vegetable section is spreading day by day.

There I found an unfamiliar vegetable called "orina."
It looked somewhat like canola leaves.
(or broccolini, or whatever you call them)
Not knowing what they taste like
I decided not to buy them.

However, the next day,
my neighbor gave me a stack of green vegetable
and told me it was "orina."

To me, the "orina" she gave me and
the "orina" I saw at the supermarket looked
somewhat different.

Later, I found out that both "orinas" were
a kind of cruciferous vegetables
and also that there are several kinds of
vegetables that the locals call "orina."
The word "orina" is composed of a term
"oru 折る" which means to snap
and "na　菜" meaning stem or leaf or both.
A kind of cruciferous vegetables
which are snapped when picking
are often called "orina" in this area.

Interestingly, I found many other names being used in different areas.

Anyways,
these "orina" becomes bright green when boiled
and tastes a little bitter,
a taste of spring♪ containing lots of Vitamins.
It goes well with mayonnaise, miso & vinegar,
soy sauce & dried bonito, I mean anything!!

長い冬が終わり、「地元野菜」のコーナーが
少しずつ充実してきました。

その一角に「折り菜」という名の
菜の花に似た、初めて見る野菜をみつけました。
どのように食べるか分からず、
そのまま買わずに帰宅しました。

次の日、ご近所の方が
「折り菜」だよ、と見たことのない野菜を
くださいました。

スーパーで見た「折り菜」と
今手元にある「折り菜」はなんだか違う、、、。

少しネットで調べてみると
どうやら折り菜は「あぶらな科」の野菜のようです。
春一番に育ち、収穫する際に
ポキっと折って収穫するので「折り菜」と呼び
スーパーに並ぶ「折り菜」はある特定の品種のようですが、
地元の方々は似たような野菜を
全て「折り菜」と呼び親しんでいるようです。

そして、別の地ではまた別の呼び名があるようです。

この「折り菜」
菜花とよく似ていて
ほんのり苦味がある春の味♪
ビタミンたっぷりの野菜です。
マヨネーズ、酢味噌、醤油と鰹節
どのように食べてもおいしいのです！！

子供の日 "kodomonohi" in Takayama

"Kodomonohi" is a boy's festival,
typically celebrated on the 5th of May in Japan.

We display a miniature kabuto, a samurai helmet,
and koinobori, carp streamers
to celebrate the day.

I just found out that even "Kodomonohi" is celebrated
one month later, on the 5th of June,
for the late coming of spring, here in Takayama,
just like "Hinamatsuri."

We already have our kabuto out!!
I guess we'll enjoy them for another month!!

ひな祭りと同じで
こちらでは「子共の日」も
一か月遅れで祝うそうです！！

もう兜はとっくに出しましたが、
いつもより長く楽しもうと思います。

雨の山王祭 rainy Takayama Spring Festival

The weather forecast was right, unfortunately.

It was rainy the whole day yesterday

and it is still raining today.

But of course, rain doesn't stop us from going to the festival.

After school, my son and daughter grabbed their yellow umbrellas

and we literally skipped to the old town area 

where the festival takes place : )

Beautifully lit chochin (Japanese style lanterns) were out

making the town look somewhat different from always.

Although the parade was cancelled, 

we were able to view the festival floats up close!!

It was just fascinating to walk around the town area at dusk.

The atmosphere was romantic and even nostalgic.

We truly enjoyed the rainy Spring Festival;

HOWEVER, we can't wait to view the floats parade around town

in the Autumn Festival!!

天気予報は外れませんでした　涙。

昨日は一日雨、、、

そして今朝もまだ降っています。

ただ、雨ぐらいで留まる私たちではありません　笑。

学校が終わると、黄色い傘を持ち、

古い町並みへ向かいました。

町並みの雰囲気はいつもと少し違っていて

祭の提灯がキレイに灯されていました。

曳き揃えは中止でしたが、

通常閉じてある蔵の扉は開かれ、

屋台を間近で見学することができました。

夕暮れ時の町並みは

なんとも幻想的で素敵でした。

雨の山王祭も悪くないのですが、

やはり！！

屋台の曳き揃えを見てみたい。

秋の八幡祭に期待します。

雨が降ったら、、、 in case of rain...

If it rains tomorrow and/or the next day  (April 14th and 15th)
the parade of the twelve festival floats will be canceled.

The festival floats are formally registered as
"Important Tangible Folk-Cultural Property,"
therefore, they will stay under the roofs to be viewed only.

Please, please, please!!!
Don't let it rain!!!

高山祭の二日間、雨天の場合は
屋台の曳き揃えは中止になるそうです。

祭の屋台は
重要有形民俗文化財であるため
雨の中外に出すわけにはいかず
屋台蔵の中に納まったまま見学のみ可能になるようです。

雨よ、
降らないで～～。

春の高山祭「山王祭」 Takayama Spring Festival

The famous Takayama Spring Festival is held on
April 14th and 15th every year.

   "It heralds the coming of spring to Takayama,
   a small, snow-bound city nestled between mountains: not only
   do the people bask in the joy of spring, but through the festival
   they also beseech the gods for good harvests and
   peace for the year."
          -from a brochure published by Takayama City Office-

The city is already filled with tourists!!

The festival is also famous for the exquisite yatai (festival floats).
which is decorated with wooden carvings and metal ornaments
as well as lacquer-works.

The long awaited spring is finally here!!
People are so eager to celebrate the coming of a
beautiful season and at the same time,
they pray for good harvests before the arrival of another harsh winter.

We are still new here, but
having experienced the long and cold winter
we truly understand the "joy"
of the coming of this marvelous season!!


有名な高山祭、
春の祭は「山王祭（さんのうまつり）」と呼ぶそうです。
毎年開催日は同じで4月14日と15日です。

山王祭は、春の訪れを祝い
神々に豊作を祈る祭です。

すでに、高山は観光客で埋め尽くされています。

高山祭は、その美しい「屋台」で有名です。
１２台の屋台はそれぞれ複雑な装飾で彩られています。

待ちに待った春です！！
爛漫な春を盛大に祝い、
今年の健康と豊作を祈る、
まだまだ新参者ですが、
厳しい冬を経験してみて
その喜びや期待が理解できた気がします。

It snowed on the 8th and
we thought winter was back again
but the sun is obviously shining brightly on the mountains
and melting their white blanket.

Spring IS here!!

違いが分かりますか。

8日に雪が降り、
冬に逆戻り？と心配しましたが、
太陽は確実に山の上の白いブラケットを溶かしていたようです。

やっぱり春です！！

Last week, we had a photo shooting at our
favorite place. (guest house and cafe SOY)

My daughter is wearing a kimono I wore when I was her age.
An old kimono and a hundred-year-old Japanese house matches perfectly.
The atmosphere and the dark tones of an old house
enhances the beauty of the kimono.

The last three pictures were taken by a photographer named Mr. Sakaue,
(Total Design CLUE) who takes beautiful photos at a fair price.
He is willing to experience all kinds of photo-shooting in
various locations and situations.

We enjoyed the photo shooting with all the amazing people.
Thanks to Kogawa-san of SOY and Sakaue-san, the photographer,
and also Ueda-san and Ishihara-san, the hairdressers. (Cuore)


先週、大好きな場所で写真撮影をしました。
（ゲストハウス＆カフェ SOY）

娘は、私が同じ頃に着た古い着物を着ています。
古い着物と古い建物がぴったりマッチしていると思いませんか。
ゲストハウスの重厚感が着物をより美しくみせてくれます。

後半3枚の写真はトータルデザイン　クルーの坂上さんが
撮ってくださいました。
とてもリーズナブルな金額で撮影してくださる上に
新しいことへのチャレンジを恐れない、
むしろ一緒に楽しんでくださるとても素敵な方です。

スタジオではなく、好きな場所で撮影したい！
と言う私のワガママに付き合ってくださった

きなこタフィー② kinako toffee②

Which is it?
I actually tried making "kinako toffee" yesterday!!

My daughter says that kinako and sugar are simply
sprinkled over roasted soybeans
so I made the first plate on the left.

However,
in this way, both kinako and sugar won't stick to the beans
so we had to scoop the powder and the beans with spoons in order to
enjoy the sweetness of the sugar and the flavor of kinako with the beans.

I made the second plate on the right with the advise of my friend and my sister.
I heated some sugar and placed the soybeans into the melted sugar
then sprinkled some kinako over them.
In this way, kinako sticks nicely on the beans and the cooled sugar becomes crunchy!!

After trying both,
I asked my daughter which was more close to the "kinako toffee" served at school.

The answer was
"it's between the two"
hmmmmmmmmm............................

Perhaps
make as the second ones but use less sugar
and more kinako...

Anyways,
both tasted delicious in each ways!!
I might add some grinded sesame or some cinnamon the next time!!

It's a wonderful, healthy snack for sure.


これでいいの？
どっちがあっているの？
昨日、あの「きなこタフィー」を作ってみました！！

娘は
「炒り大豆にきなこと砂糖がかかっているだけ」と言う。
左のお皿がそれです。

しかし、これでは砂糖ときなこが大豆に絡みません。
砂糖の甘味と大豆の香りを楽しむにはスプーンで粉と大豆を
すくって食べる方法しかありません。

友人と妹のアドバイスをもらい、
写真右のものを作ってみました。
溶かした砂糖に炒った大豆を入れ、
最後にきなこをまぶします。
こうすれば、きなこは大豆によく絡み、冷めた砂糖がパリパリして
食感もさらによくなりました。

両方食べてみて、
学校の「きなこタフィー」がどちらに近いか尋ねてみました。

回答は、、、
「両方の中間！！」
だそうです。
んんんんんんんんんんんんんんんん。

二皿目の砂糖を減らし、
きなこを増やすといいのかな、、、。

難しいっ、でも
どちらもおいしくて大満足でした。
次回はゴマやシナモンを加えてみようかな。

いずれにしても
健康的で素晴らしいおやつであることには違いありません。

春の知らせ signs of spring

Spring has finally come!!

There are signs of spring here and there.

First of all,
no more snow in sight.
Actually, snow still remains if we travel a few kilometers
away from the center of the city,
but at least they're gone from our neighbors.

We still await for the cherry blossoms to bloom
but guess what?
We found tsukushi, a horsetail shoot & fukinoto, a butterbur flower stalk
10 steps away from our front door!!
Beautiful flowers are decorating the footpath of rice paddies.

Warm and beautiful spring is spreading.



高山も、もう春です！！

あちこちに春の知らせが届いています。

まずは雪！
あんなにたくさんあった雪が、もうない、、、。
実際は町から少し離れると
まだまだ雪が残っているのですが、
とりあえず、中心地の雪はすっかりなくなってしまいました。

桜開花はまだです、、、。
でも！
玄関から１０歩のところで
「つくし」と「ふきのとう」を発見！！
田んぼのあぜ道を彩どりの花が装飾しています。

暖かい春が広がっています。

今日がひな祭り It's Girl's Festival in Takayama today

As I have mentioned earlier,
today(April 3rd) is Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival)
in Takayama region.

Ads also tell us it's Hinamatsuri.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do,
we are celebrating Hinamatsuri today!!

The temperature still remains low
in evenings and mornings but
spring is obviously here
and greens and other colors are spreading
gradually throughout Takayama.

We are waiting for the cherry blossoms to bloom
and the famous "Takayama Spring Festival"
is within two weeks!!

我が家では本日お祝いをします。

もう春です♪

少しずつ辺りに広がっています。

桜開花の便りが楽しみです。
そして有名な「春の高山祭」まで
後２週間を切りました。
また報告しますね。
