Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

Cheers to new findings!!

Hina dolls (for the girl's festival) & chives

Today's post is about something new that I found out this year
after living here for more than 3 years!!

I have posted several times previously
that people celebrate Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival)
a month later than usual on the 3rd of April.

I found out that the locals would place fresh chives beside
the dolls for decorations.
I was explained that that was the only green plants
that they could get in the old times,
plus, since the chives grow straight upwards,
they were decorated together with the dolls in wish
for the girls to healthy growth.

I never noticed the chives.
Too bad I found out about it after the festival.
I will definitely go look for them next year!!

Hinamatsuri

Don't forget!!
Today is "Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival)" in Takayama.

Spring seems to have arrived a bit early this year.
It is getting quite warm during the daytime.

Ume (Japanese Plum Tree) is at its full bloom now!!
And we can observe so many kinds of beautiful birds these days.
Too bad I don't have photos of them.

Happy Hinamatsuri!!

Girl's Festival

It was Girl's Festival yesterday in Japan (March 3),
but as I've written before,
Girl's Festival in Takayama is celebrated on April 3rd.
(Girl's Festival in Takayama)

Many houses and shops are putting out beautiful Hina Dolls,
and it is so much fun doing a
"find hina dolls walk" in the old town area.

I haven't had the time to visit many shops yet
but that's all right, I still have another month!!

It's Girl's Festival in Takayama today

As I have mentioned earlier,
today(April 3rd) is Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival)
in Takayama region.

Ads also tell us it's Hinamatsuri.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do,
we are celebrating Hinamatsuri today!!

The temperature still remains low
in evenings and mornings but
spring is obviously here
and greens and other colors are spreading
gradually throughout Takayama.

We are waiting for the cherry blossoms to bloom
and the famous "Takayama Spring Festival"
is within two weeks!!

Hinamatsuri" in Takayama

"Hinamatsuri" is a girl's festival,
typically celebrated on the 3rd of March in Japan.

We display a set of dolls in ancient costumes.
It is said that these dolls protect us from
sickness and ill-fortunes.

In Takayama, since spring comes a little later,
people celebrate this festival on the 3rd of April.
I heard there's an interesting custom here.
Children walk around the neighbors saying
"show me your hina-dolls, I will praise them
even if they don't look good!!"
and they get snacks and candies.
The meaning is quite different
but walking around the neighbors and getting
candies is just like Halloween!!

Unfortunately, they told me that these
customs are disappearing each year.

It is typical for such old customs to change
their styles through the passing of times,
but my hope is that they remain,
in whatever ways, as a reminder of
ancient people's wish to live a simple and happy life,
flowing along with the rhythm of nature,
celebrating the coming and going of the seasons.

Well, it's easier said than done.
