Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

Cheers to new findings!!

Japanese serow

I'm not sure if you are familiar with an animal called serow.
In Japan, we have Japanese serow that is a nationally protected species.

Until I came to Takayama, I had never seen them,
just in books or on TV programs.
However, ever since we started living here
we encounter Japanese serow quite a few times.

In fact, in the past three days, I have met three of them!!
Isn't it fun?

I wasn't quick enough to take photos of them, but trust me,
just walk a little near the mountains,
I mean it doesn't even have to be the mountains,
just up in the hills where there are a lot of trees around you
and observe carefully, you may see them if you are lucky.

I was talking about it with my daughter
and she said casually sounding as though it was nothing special,
that she sees them almost every week at the backyard of her school!!
Wow.

It is actually very special!!!
Aren't we lucky?

I really want to take some photo of them before I leave Takayama.
Wish me luck!!

  1. I'm not familiar with the word 'serow' in English. My dictionary suggests that 'wild goat' is another definition. I wonder if that's different than a mountain goat?
Hoping to see a picture one day!

    1. You're right!! I had never heard of serow in English as well :) However, if you search for 'serow' on a website and see their image, that is exactly what we find here!! Jananese serow is a species that you can only find in Japan. They look somewhat different from wild or mountain goats. They're more fluffier :)
