Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

さなえです。2014年10月~2019年3月まで岐阜県高山市で過ごしました。山に囲まれた美しいこの町が大好きです。

実はすでに高山を出てしまいました。が、この先も時々高山インフォメーションをアップしつつ、近辺(愛知)の様子もお伝えしていこうと思います。

そうそう、それと
何を隠そう、今回の引越は人生で14度目の引越!あちこちと動き回ったものです。遠距離への引越はもちろん、同じ市内の引越であっても、違う角度から見る空は、全然違っていて、人生をがらっと変えてしまうことすらあります。「当たり前」の明日が来ない生活、大変なことも多いけど、学ぶこともたくさん!そんな「引っ越しあるある」も時々シェアしていきますね。

山菜 wild edible plants

Takayama is a city surrounded by mountains.
Nowadays, because of the expressways and convenient vehicles,
we are able to get fresh fish from the Japan Sea,
and also the city is now very famous for its beef (Hida Beef),
but in the old days, the food culture used to be very different.

People now still eat "wild edible plants."
We call it "sansai" in Japanese.
Sansai is edible plants that are grown naturally
and are picked in the forest (not cultivated).

Since we come from a more of a city area,
we have eaten "sansai" BUT
we couldn't get them very fresh.
Most of the time they were boiled already
and we ate them with buckwheat noodle or udon only.

Embarassingly, we can't tell the names
and we're not sure how to cook them.

Here in Takayama,
we see so many kinds of them in morning markets
and in supermarkets.

People make tempuras, boil them and enjoy them with soy sauce,
sometimes have them with miso dips or dress them with sesame seeds.

I was so surprised that some could be eaten fresh and raw without even boiling.

It's going to take a while to remember the names
and learn how they could be eaten.
(whether they need to be boiled, or whether they could be eaten raw and so forth.)

Eat seasonal and enjoy the local tastes as much as possible,
are what we should try to do.

山々で囲まれた高山市、
今では、流通の発達のお陰で
日本海の新鮮な魚介を手に入れることができたり
飛騨牛が随分有名になったりで
食文化も変化してきました。

ただ、まだまだ山の恵「山菜」をいただく週間はそのまま残っています。

今まで山菜を食べたことがないわけではありません。
ただ、こんなに新鮮なものは正直口にしたことがありませんでした。
食べたことがあるのは、いわゆる麺類に入った山菜程度です。

恥ずかしながら、
それぞれの山菜の名前や特徴、調理の仕方の知識もないのです。

この時期のこの辺りでは、
スーパーにも、朝市にも
相当な種類の山菜が置かれています。

天ぷら、おひたし、味噌につけて、和え物にしていただくのはもちろん、
そのまま生でいただけるものもあり、驚きました。

名前を覚えるには少し時間がかかりそう。
そして、アク抜きの必要があるのかないのか、
などなど山菜も色々奥が深そうです。

季節のもの、地の物をいただく、
極力そうしたいと考えています。

    You often ate very fresh Sansai in Takayama now. What enviable...I think it's good for your health. Your point of view is really great.
    In the Thailand, I don't eat too much fresh vegetables. I often eat at outside of restaurant. Hear is don't use good oil. I think that this oil is a bad health.This things is very dangerous.

      Yes!! We get to eat lots of fresh vegetables here!! Tomo, I'm sure you can get fresh vegetables where you live. Why don't you start cooking? It would be great!!

  2. I cooking not good. And I don't have any cooking tool. And Thai foods are not expensive. It's a very convinience.

    1. Tomo!! You are not born with cooking talent!! You have to learn and experience cooking!! If you want to stay healthy and if you're worried about the oil you should start cooking by yourself :) ともの最後の文章はIt's very convenient!! になるのが正解だよ。あと、料理が上手じゃない、、はI don't cook wellや、I'm not a good cookとかの方がいいのかなぁ。
