"Dango" as I have mentioned before, is a Japanese sweet
made of "mochiko (a powdermade of sticky rice)."
It is round shaped and three, four or more of them are
served on a skewer.
We've tried lots of flavors, such as "mitarashi," "kinako," "nori" and "yomogi."
I found out that the most popular flavor in Takayama is "mitarashi."
"Mitarashi Dango" is made everywhere in Japan
but this "mitarashi" is often a sweet and flavored with soy sauce.
To my surprise, the "mitarashis" made in Takayama are not sweet at all.
They are flavored simply with soy sauce.
And still they are enjoyed as popular snacks among the people.
I certainly love sweet snacks; however, this
"not sweet mitarashi" is definitely listed in my "favorite snacks" now.
I highly recommend everyone to try it when visiting Takayama.
