忙しいけど it's not that

Yes,
I AM busy!

This April was the busiest month
ever since I moved to Takayama.
BUT,
it's not that I'm not having fun.

I simply don't have the time to update my blog.

We've traveled south and north to
enjoy the cherry blossoms.

In all cases, the great thing about the cherry blossoms here
is that we can enjoy them in a rather peaceful atmosphere.
Isn't it wonderful that we could take photos with
just us and the trees?

さすがに
忙しい！！

この４月は、高山に引っ越してから
一番忙しい一か月でした～。
でも、
楽しむことは忘れていませんよ。

ブログを更新する時間がないだけです。

満開の桜を見るために
北へ南へと出かけました。

こちらの「花見」の素敵なところは
人混みがほとんどない、ということ。
満開の立派な桜の前で
ばっちり自分たちだけの写真が撮れちゃいます♪

カッコウ a cuckoo bird

During this season of the year,
we often hear cuckoo birds calling in this area.

I'm not sure if you've ever listened to an actual calling of cuckoo birds.
For me, it was the first time to listen to its live sound!!

And to my surprise,
I find cuckoo birds near my house or near the central area of the town
just like any pigeon sitting on an electric wires.

The cuckoo birds make such pleasant sound,
I always stop and listen to it whenever I find it until it stops calling.

Too bad I don't have any photos of them

Isn't it wonderful that we get to listen to such beautiful calling?

Actually I do have a photo that I took a few days ago
but the cuckoo bird is sooooooooo tiny.
Can you see him in the center of the photo? : )

この時期になると
この辺りではよく、カッコウの声を耳にします。

カッコウの声、聞いたことはありますか。
私は、こちらへ来て、初めて「生カッコウの声」を聞きました。

驚くことに
家の目の前の電線や、
街の中心地に
まるでハトのように普通にカッコウがとまって
鳴いているのです。

高山に引っ越して、だいぶ慣れてきたものの
鳴いているカッコウを見つけると
立ち止まって泣き止むまでその場を去れなくなる私、、、。

自分で撮った写真や映像がないのは残念ですが、
よく目にするようなカッコウの動画を見つけたので
リンクを貼ってみます。

こんな声が朝から近所で聞けたら
ちょっと幸福ですよね。

実は、
数日前、近所で撮った写真があるにはあるのですが、、、
小さすぎる、、、、、汗
電線にとまっているの、見えますか？

特例ガイド業務していました tour guiding!!

I had been doing my tour guiding job for several days.
It's in the middle of the "Golden Week," remember?

The old town area and the morning market are packed with tourists.

I went to the station several times to pick up my client
and I start thinking, is this Japan?

Cherry blossoms have ended and fresh green season has come!!

The mornings are still quite cold but as soon as the sun goes up high,
it is probably the best season to take a stroll around.
Beside the fact that it is in the middle of the Golden Week,
no wonder there are so many tourists in the city.

The best thing about doing this job is that I get to share thoughts
with so many different people from around the world.
Chat about each other's everyday life,
discuss the economic problems of the countries,
complain about the politics and so forth.

Being asked about our way of living,
our culture, our religion, our houses,
it makes me stop, think and rethink about
what we eat and do without even noticing.

I was complaining about how
rules and regulations are too strict at schools and societies in Japan.
I was complaining that we should live a freer life
not minding too much about the "others."

But my clients tell me everyday,
how impressed they are with the politeness and the patience that we, Japanese, have,
and how well treated they are everywhere they go,
and how clean the town, the public facilities are
and so forth.

Strengths and weaknesses,
when one changes,
the other simply turns around, I guess.

Which is better, I don't know.
But the strength of Japan, I believe is quite unique,
we should probably keep them and reinforce them even.

I just love discussing endlessly about things that cannot be solved.

ここ数日間は、特例ガイド業務をしておりました。
ゴールデンウィークですから！！

古い町並みも朝市も人で溢れかえっています。

駅にお客様を迎えに行く度に、
ここは日本？と疑問に思ってしまうほどの外国人観光客の数なのです。

桜は終わり、新緑シーズンに突入です。

朝はまだまだ寒い高山ですが、
陽が高くなる頃には散歩に最適な気温、
一番いい季節なのかもしれません。
ここまで大勢の観光客が訪れるのは
ゴールデンウィークが理由だけではないということですね。

以前もお伝えしたように
この仕事で一番素敵なこと、
それは世界からいらっしゃる様々な国の方々と
普段の生活について、
時には経済の問題について
政治に関する不平不満について
ニュースには載らないことについて意見交換できることです。

普段、気にも留めないようなことに関して
聞かれ、驚かれ、
こちらも日々の何気ないことについて
疑問を投げかけあれこれ考えるようになるわけです。

日本での生活って
規律や規則がたくさんあり過ぎて
人に迷惑をかけない、我慢する、
周囲の目を気にする
そんなの窮屈
もっと「個」を大切にするべきでは、
他人の目を気にせず自由に生きたい
そんな風によく考えます。

でも、
毎日のようにお客様から言われるのです。
秩序があり
誰と話しても礼儀正しくて
我慢強くて心が温かい、
こんな国は他にない、
僕たちは自分の国が恥ずかしくなる時があるよ。
街もとても美しい。
そんなに褒めてもらったら照れちゃうわ、
というくら褒めてくださいます。

規律や規則を緩めたなら、
回りの目を気にしなくなったのなら、
長所と短所は紙一重、、、ですね。

どちらがいいのかな、
わかりません。
でも、日本のいいところは
やっぱりどこもマネのできない特別なもの。
より強化させなくてはいけないくらいかもしれません。

答えの出ない、こんなことについて
あれこれおしゃべりすることが大好きです。

春の高山祭 Takayama Spring Festival 2016

The weather was perfect!!
Cherry trees were blooming at their peak!!
We enjoyed the most beautiful Spring Festival!!

The beauty of the floats themselves were elaborated by the
blue sky and the pink blossoms!!

As I have explained a little,
spring and autumn festival are of different shrines.

The festival floats come from different areas as well
and it is wonderful to observe the details of each float,
its wood carvings,
embroideries,
tapestry, and so forth.


By the way,
I had been and will be having busy days
and I will not be able to update the blog as often.

There are lots I would like to share
but forgive me, please.

I will try my best, though.

I am a "carpe diem worshipper" so to speak.
I try to enjoy the fullest of each and every moment as possible.

If there are things I can't miss,
I will simply go for it.

I'm doing things I must.
Just imagine me running around trying to catch all the things
I shouldn't miss, if I don't show up here!!

Believe me, I will not be ruled and pressed for time,
I will always be the one controlling it!!

I hope you are, too!!

天気も
桜のタイミングも　
完璧でした！！

屋台そのものの美しさが
青空と桜で装飾され
なんとも贅沢な山王祭を堪能できました。

前回少し説明したように、
春と秋はそれぞれ別の神社の例祭なので、
登場する屋台もそれぞれ違います。
木彫り、
刺繍、
つづれ織り
など、細部までじっくり鑑賞し、
各屋台組の方々のこだわりについて
お話を聞くこともできました！！


ところで、
何かと予定（仕事）が多いこの季節、
ブログのアップがペースダウンしてしまい
ごめんなさい。

シェアしたい出来事はたくさんあるのですが、
どうぞお許しください。

もちろん、なるべく
がんばります♪

この日　を大切に
そして、これらをいかに楽しむか　を常に考えて暮らしています。

今しかできないことが突発的に目の前に現れたら
それを逃しません。

ここのブログに姿を見せない時は
一瞬一瞬を逃すまいと必死になっている私の姿を想像してくださいね　笑。

時間に追われるのは嫌いです。
（もちろん理想ですが、、、）
時間をコントロールするのは自分でありたいです。

そうしたいですよね？

Finally, I got my PC straight!!

Guess what?
I fixed it myself!!

It is sooooo troublesome to live without a properly working PC these days
BUT believe me!!
I really enjoyed the days without it.

You may have done it before
but we seriously need an hour, a day, a week or even a month
of a "PCless life"

Anyways, I'm back (I hope I am)
and will be posting some updates again.

Last year, we still had piles of snow everywhere in the city,
but this year, we're observing "spring" everywhere!!

I hadn't written for more than a week!!
What shall I start with?

なんとかかんとか
パソコンが回復しました。

なんと、
自分でなんとかすることができたのです。（奇跡）

現代の生活においては、パソコンのない日々は不便でなりません。
しかし
そんな日々を思いっきり楽しんでいました　笑。

もう試した方もいらっしゃると思います。
一時間、一日、一週間、うーーんもっと思い切って一か月、
「パソコン無し生活」を強制的にしてみるのって
いいことなのでしょうね。

そんなことはさておき
戻って参りました。（多分）

昨年の今頃はまだまだ雪だらけの高山でしたが、
今年はもうあちらもこちらもすっかり春めいております。

一週間以上空けてしまったので
何から始めようかな。

塩麹 salted rice malt

Takayama

Rice malt is one of the key ingredients when making good sake
It is also used in soy sauce, miso, and vinegar and lots of other seasonings as well.

Having rice malt made under such perfect condition,
of course I have to make use of it in every way as possible!!

At my favorite miso shop called "Kojiya"
I bought 500 g of rice malt and made "salted rice malt."

Salted rice malt is made of salt, rice malt, and water, how simple!!

Salted rice malt can be used to marinate
meat, fish, vegetables, I mean anything you can think of!!

Just marinate any ingredients and cook them.

I even made "salted rice malt dressing."

It softens and improves the texture and enhances the flavor
of whatever you have marinated.

Believe me,
we're having "salted rice malt something" everyday, ha-ha.

山々に囲まれた高山

いい水
いい米
うまい酒

このうまい酒を造りだす大切な材料のひとつが「麹」です。
醤油、味噌、酢、その他様々な調味料に使われています。

こんな「完璧な麹」が手に入る環境下で
麹を活かさない手はありません。

私の大好きな「こうじや」さんにて
500グラムの「こうじ」を手に入れました。
この「こうじ」で塩麹を作りました。

塩麹は、塩、麹、水で作ります。

塩麹で
肉、魚、野菜、
とにかく色々な物を浸けます。

思いつくものをあれこれ浸けて、調理します。

塩麹ドレッシングも作ってみました。

塩麹に浸けると、
肉も魚も
柔らかく、そして香りも良くなります！！

塩麹効果にはまってしまった我が家、、、
毎日のように「塩麹○○」を食べています、
本当です！！　　笑

それでも毎日のように almost everyday recently

Yes!!
They say, we're having a warm winter this year.

We agree.

I'm not sure of the actual temperature differences compared to regular years,
but it certainly is warmer compared to last year.
(that is all the data we have, actually)

BUT
Takayama is Takayama, if you know what I mean.

We have been having cold mornings
and almost every morning these days,
rice paddies, vegetable gardens, roofs, and trees are covered with
thin layer of snow.

It's just that, it doesn't snow as much as it does typically.

Takayama is Takayama,
to us who come from "unsnowy" environment,
this winter has been cold enough and snowy enough!

Now, we've experienced winter with "heavy snow"
and "no snow" (at least, that is what people of Takayama say),
we are so looking forward to what it's going to be like the next winter!! : )

そう、
今年は暖冬、

それはそうだと思います。

実際、例年との気温差が何度かは分かりませんが
少なくとも去年よりは温かいです。
（我が家には去年のデータしかないので、、、笑）

でも、
高山は高山なんです。

毎朝、本当に寒い、
ここ最近は毎朝のように
目覚めると、外はうっすら雪景色なんです。
田んぼ、畑、屋根、そして木々も雪で覆われています。

ただ、雪の量がいつもと全然違うのでしょうね。

やはり高山は高山
私たちのように雪国素人に言わせれば
充分寒ければ、充分雪だって降っているわけです。

豪雪だった去年、
雪なしだった今年（少なくとも高山の方々はそう言います）
さぁ、次の冬はどうなるかなーー？

あったらいいのにな we wish

It has been a year and four months since we've moved to Takayama.

We're so much in love with this city
and we can go on and on listing up the good things about it.

But there are some things
we wish....

YES, Takayama is surrounded by beautiful mountains.

YES, there are lots of rice paddies and vegetable gardens.

YES, there are lots and lots of flowers and trees on the streets.

BUT!!!!!!

there are only a few parks in the town.

We strongly wish there were more parks in the town area
where kids can gather and run around on daily basis.

We're not wishing this quietly,
we're kind of ready to go talk to the Mayer about it : )

高山に来て一年と四か月が経ちました。

高山が大好きです。
好きなところを挙げ出したらきりがありません。

でも、
あったらいいのにな、
と願う事もあります。

そう、高山は美しい山々に囲まれた町、

そう、高山には田んぼも畑もたくさん、

そう、道には綺麗な花や木々がいっぱい、

なのに！！！

街中に公園がほとんどないんです。

人々の住む街中に、
子供たちが集まり、走り回る公園がやはり必要だと思います。

頭の中で願っているだけでは何も変わらないので、
よし！市役所へ行ってお願いしてこよう！！
（本気　笑）

My son goes to abacus school once a week.

He goes with his best friend!!

And here is what it looks like on a snowy day!!

All elementary school kids carry yellow umbrellas in Takayama.
At first, we were a bit against having to carry the same yellow umbrella
as everyone else, but we were explained that the whole town is watching
and protecting the kids and we'll know at once that those with yellow umbrellas
are either on their way to school or home..

Also, you can see how these yellow umbrellas stand out in the snow!!

Road becomes slippery
and people are paying extra attention to their driving speed and where they drive.
Kids themselves have to pay attention to their surroundings and where
they walk.

We all have to care not just about one's self but others to
maintain safety in such snowy environment.

We truly hope that the town will remain a place
where kids with yellow umbrellas can run around freely and safely.


息子は週に一度、そろばん塾に通っています。

彼の大親友と。

ある雪のそろばん塾の日の様子です。

高山の小学生は全員黄色い傘を使います。
正直、はじめは、全員同じ傘じゃなくてもいいんじゃないの？
と少し否定的な気持ちがありました。
でも、「町のみんなが黄色い傘の子供たちを守る」と言う考えを
聞き、すぐに納得しました。

実際にこの黄色が雪の中で
とても目立つのです。

雪が降り積もると
道路の状況が一気に悪化します。
運転する者は速度や周囲の人に得に注意をしなくてはなりません。
気を付けるのは運転者だけではありません、子供たち自身もです。
雪に集中してばかりではなく、歩く場所、車に注意しなくてはなりません。

雪の環境下では、
自己中心的な行動（運転）は絶対にできないのです。
「ゆずる」「周囲を気遣う」気持ちが必要です。

雪深い高山の町、
黄色い傘の子供たちが
いつでも自由に
安全に走り回れる環境でありますように。

「縁」がつながり「円」になる "en" and "en"

Today I'm having a difficult time
picking English words to explain
what I want to express.

It would be wonderful if anyone could
add to what I'm trying to say in this post.
(if you get what I mean)

I have told you in my previous posts how close
we are to the agricultural producers, manufacturers,
shop owners that we have plenty of opportunities to
talk with them and sometimes even build
personal relationships with them
here in Takayama.

These chances, "en," that we're having to meet interesting people,
gives us further opportunities to meet other people.
Many times we're introduced to others
and other times, we meet them in completely different situations;
however, the funny thing is that in many cases,
people I meet in "place A"
is already a friend of whom I met in "place B."

The seemingly fateful encounter with a wonderful person A "縁　en"
is already connected to another person B I've met in a different place (another "縁 en")
and these relationships are forming a circle "円 en."

Oh no, am I sounding religious or
is it becoming too philosophical?

Anyways, what I'm trying to express is that
there are loads of wonderful people
producing marvelous products with
their utmost effort to make the customers happy.
And once we get to know one of them well,
they introduce us to others and then to others.
We do the same in return and
we realize that we are all connected in a one big circle supporting each other.



今回の話、
英語に直すのが大変、、、。
正確には英語の文から先に考えましたが
うまく英語で表すことのできない「縁」という言葉に苦労しました。
今回の投稿に関しては「訳」ではなく
英語、日本語それぞれの文章だと思って頂いた方が
いいかもしれません。


以前少し触れたように
高山で暮らしていると
「生産者」や「店主」「事業主」と
直接話をする機会が多くあります。

直接話ができる分、
客のリアクションは
ダイレクトに返ってきます。
多くの生産者さんが
相当なこだわりを持って
愛着を持って
自信を持って
「良い商品」を作っています。

大好きなカフェやレストランにて
おいしい！と感激し
話を聞くと
すでに私が別の「ご縁」で知り合った
農家さんのものだったりする。
市の物理的なサイズは大きくとも
人口が一部に集中している高山ならではなのでしょうか、
こんな風に
こちらの「縁」とあちらの「縁」がつながり
ひとつの「円」になっているようです。

それぞれが
「作り出すもの」に自信を持ち
「仕入れるもの」
「使うもの」にこだわりを持ち
紹介し、紹介され
ぐるぐると
乱れることのない
強い結び付きで
どんどんとその「縁と円」は広がっているように思います。

是非みなさんも
この大きな円の中の
心地よさを少し体験してみてください。

秘密基地掘り building a hideout

高山にやってきて半月以上経ちました。

子供は小学校へ通い、
もちろんまだまだ慣れなくて戸惑うこともあるだろうけど
ここからの通学がすっかり「日常」になりつつあります。

分団で登校
近所の子と下校
ランドセルをおいてすぐに遊びに出る

５時になると時を知らせる音楽が町中に流れる
田んぼのあぜ道を走って帰宅する

宿題
食事
就寝

これが平日の「パターン」です。

さて、ランドセルを置いてから
５時の音楽が流れるまでに
我が子たち、何をしているのでしょう？

「美しい景色」にも書きましたが
近所には公園がありません。
必至にあちこち探してみましたが、
帰宅後に通える範囲に公園が見当たりません。

我が子に聞いてみました。
田んぼの向こうで何をしているの？

「秘密基地」を掘ってるのーーー！！！

お友達の畑の横にある土地に
子供二人がやっと入れるくらいの
「基地」を掘っているらしい。
そして、その中は温かいんだそうです。

どうやって掘っているんだろう。
何を使って掘っているんだろう。
見てみたい見てみたい。

でも「秘密基地」だから「秘密」です。
大人は覗いてはいけないのです。

秘密基地の中で食べるおやつは
おいしいんだろうなぁ。


Half a month has passed since we moved to Takayama.

My daughter goes to school five days a week,
and she is already getting used to going to school from here.

She goes to school by walk in a group.
She comes back with her friends who lives nearby.
She puts down her school bag and goes out to play with her friend.

A music plays throughout the town telling it's 5 pm.
She comes running through the rice field from nowhere.

do homework
have dinner
go to sleep

this is her every day life.

I was wondering,
"what is she doing with her friends?"

I wrote in my previous post that there are no parks around.

The answer was
"I am building a hideout with my friends!!"

To be precise, she is "digging" a hideout besides a vegetable garden at her friends house.
They are digging a huge hole.
I mean "huge" for their size.
She told me that  two kids can fit in the space and that
it's warm inside.

How are they digging the hideout?
What are they using to dig it?
I'm the excited ones and I have so many questions
but hideout is a hideout, everything is secret of course.

I bet the snacks they have inside the hideout
is the most delicious thing in the world to them.
