Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

Cheers to new findings!!

There are many artists,
aside from their profession, they are all artists in each and every way,
who creates beautiful products in this region.

Let me introduce to you one of my favorite accessory artist
called "Tsuki no wa."

She carves woods and uses brasses and antique beads
to create the most simple and beautiful accessories that
match all your outfits.

Unfortunately, she doesn't own a shop,
but perhaps that's a good thing because
she is flexible to move about!!
Every once in a while, she travels here and there
perhaps will come close to your place when
market events are around.

Look for the name "Tsuki no wa" and find her beautiful products!!!

She rents a section in one of the shops in the main street of
the old town area in Takayama as well.

Takayama is the largest city in Japan areawise
but 92 percent of it is forest! Wow.

Obviously, Takayama has plenty of timber resources and
the city is famous for having lots of skillful carpenters and
wood workers.

This year at the twenty-fourth-market held in January,
I bought a lovely cutting board!!

And during summer, my son made his own cutting board
that matches his knife that he got for his birthday present!

The board is walnut and it was quite hard to carve
but I personally think he did a great job!!

He coated the wood with a thin layer of olive oil at the end!!

It's a tiny board, but perhaps, he should challenge a larger ones.
In fact, I myself, want to carve one, too!!

It's great that we can purchase wood pieces in low prices here in Takayama!!

Takayama is the biggest city in Japan in terms of the area
but surprisingly, 92 % of this huge city is forest.
Consequently, the city is well known for its rich timber resources.

Also,  we have so many skilled craftsmen here
who are often called "Takumi."

During the summer vacation,
children of elementary school till the 9th grade gets a homework,
either to do a research project or to make some kind of a craft.

We visited a hall where their works were exhibited and we were astonished
by how finely made each work was.  We were also surprised to see
so many children chose to make wooden works.

We would definitely want to try making one next year perhaps
using the beautiful pieces of woods from Takayama.
I mean of course, we're not the ones making the crafts,
the children are!!
