Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

Cheers to new findings!!

I just love and enjoy the warm hospitality
of the cashiers at any of the supermarkets
or any type of markets here.

It is not a 5-star hotel I'm talking about.

They're the supermarkets that
are loved by the locals.

I know very well that such casual conversations
won't happen this often in other places.

I'm so addicted to their warm hospitalities.

We made some at home last night.
Since they were made with leftovers from the cooking studio, where I work,
I didn't have to prepare anything.

I'm going to give it a try from scratch the next time!!

Red turnip pickles are one of the most
famous local taste of Takayama!!

In fact, I think there are many people
who think of "red turnip pickles" immediately
when hearing the name Takayama.

Various red turnip pickles are
actually being sold in every souvenir shops.
Red turnips pickles with salt,
with vinegar and sugar
with soy sauce and so forth.

There are tons of things which are being sold
as local tastes that are simply for tourists,
BUT red turnips pickles are surely loved by the locals.
Here is a photo of pickles section of a local supermarket!!
I'm 100 % sure there are no other place throughout Japan
with such huge collections of red turnip pickles!!

In Japan, some fish are called by different names
according to their growth stage.
Yellow tail is one of them.
And interestingly, these names vary from place to place
which means, some names are unfamiliar even to us Japanese.

"Fukuragi" I found out is a name used in Hokuriku area
for yellow tail which size is around 40 to 60 cm.

In the supermarkets of Takayama,
I often find this "fukuragi" being sold.

Yesterday, I found a really fresh one,
around 50 cm in its size.
(I wonder how much it weighed.)

They even had a cutting service, so why not buy one!!
(Of course, I asked them not to throw the heads and bones away.)

I had half of the "fukuragi" cut for grilling, and half for sashimi!!

Do I need to explain what they tasted like?

No, I guess not,
should come and taste them yourself!!

Oops, I forgot to take pictures of the cooked dishes.

"orina?"

What I'm writing today is
a bit difficult to translate into English.
But I'll do my best!!

After spending the looooong winter here in Takayama,
homegrown vegetable section is spreading day by day.

There I found an unfamiliar vegetable called "orina."
It looked somewhat like canola leaves.
(or broccolini, or whatever you call them)
Not knowing what they taste like
I decided not to buy them.

However, the next day,
my neighbor gave me a stack of green vegetable
and told me it was "orina."

To me, the "orina" she gave me and
the "orina" I saw at the supermarket looked
somewhat different.

Later, I found out that both "orinas" were
a kind of cruciferous vegetables
and also that there are several kinds of
vegetables that the locals call "orina."
The word "orina" is composed of a term
"oru 折る" which means to snap
and "na 菜" meaning stem or leaf or both.
A kind of cruciferous vegetables
which are snapped when picking
are often called "orina" in this area.

Interestingly, I found many other names being used in different areas.

Anyways,
these "orina" becomes bright green when boiled
and tastes a little bitter,
a taste of spring♪ containing lots of Vitamins.
It goes well with mayonnaise, miso & vinegar,
soy sauce & dried bonito, I mean anything!!

I bought three things at the local supermarket called
"Satoh" few days ago.
I've noted about "Satoh" in my previous post
it is a supermarket loved by the local residents.

The three things I bought were
Asazuke (pickles)
Jinya Tofu (bean curd)
and Inaka Aburaage (deep fried bean curd)

All three are products made in this area.
Of course they are made everywhere in Japan
but each has different tastes.
Products made in good soil and clean water make them very special and tasty.

I haven't tried the "aburaage" yet.
I'm thinking of the best way to cook them.

I've tried the "asazuke" in the simplest way with cooked rice
and "tofu" simmered in dashi soup then dipped in ponzu.

I guess I don't need to explain how good they were,
you can probably imagine.

I've got the "membership card" of the supermarket
so why not visit "Satoh" again today to find another "yummy products" there.
