Again, we visited the Sea of Japan last weekend.
In the past three years since we started living in Takayama,
we have visited the Sea of Japan so many times!!
We had a nice lunch at a local restaurant,
enjoyed the seaside stroll,
(actually, we wanted to rent bicycles but they were all out)
and visited the newest "michi-no-eki (a roadside station).”
Sometimes we want to see the horizon.
And sometimes, we want to enjoy the freshest seafood.
Had a wonderful day!!
notes of "everyday little findings" from Takayama City, Gifu, Japan
Hi from Takayama
I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.
My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!
Cheers to new findings!!

寒い、、、 so cold
Sorry, the topic is quite redundant these days.
It's almost only about snow or the coldness.
We are attending fun events and there are
lots of things going on around us,
BUT it's simply soooooo coooooooooooooold.
You are probably watching the news of the prefectures by the Sea of Japan.
Snow is so romantic and beautiful but as you are seeing on the screens,
it can destroy houses, cause car accidents,
it can be dangerous in many ways.
Here in Takayama, we are having a lot of snow but the amount is tolerable.
More than that, the coldness is becoming quite unbearable here.
There are so many days with the highest temperature being -3.
It seems like tomorrow we're having -9 or 10 for the lowest.
Anyways, still, we're trying to enjoy the winter!!
Last week, again we went to the nearby park and kids skied there!!
It's not an official ski run but of course, as long as there's a hill
and you carry your own skis uphill, you can ski anywhere!!
Is spring really coming this year?

ぶり街道祭 the yellowtail road festival
Does any of you remember about the
yellowtail road that I have noted on my blog
2 years ago?
yellowtail road
This year, too, we've visited the "Yellowtail Road Festival"
held at Asahi-mura.
It was coooooooold as we had expected
but we had a wonderful time there.
No need to explain how delicious the charcoal grilled yellowtail was.
But besides that, this year, we were invited to join the "mochi pounding."
Mochi is a chewy rice cake made by pounding sticky rice.
The huge mortar to pound sticky rice is much heavier than it looks!!
And again, no explanation is needed to describe how tasty
the "just pounded mochi" was!!
My son actually ate 5 pieces (which is like 5 bowls of rice) :)
What we really enjoy and love about visiting these festivals are
not the food that we get there but actually, the warm-hearted locals thatwe meet.

It's just great!!
It's possible to go fishing to Noto Peninsula
and come back in one day!
It was a cold and cloudy day
but we spent several hours
struggling to get fish for our dinner : )
We were too hungry by the time we arrived home
that the last picture we took was the one on the plate.
My son was aiming for a 300 kg tuna
but the largest fish we got was 20 cm!! ha-ha.

This time we got a huge yellow tail for grilling
plus a tiny one for sashimi.
Oh,
for those who's accessing this blog for the first time,
there is a fish market that we visit almost every weekend
to get fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan (and other places as well).
When you think of Takayama, you may only imagine mountains
and that is very true, BUT we can travel quite easily to the ocean
these days because of the express ways and so forth.
This time we tried one of the flatfish "hirame (sole)."
I was checking "hirame" on the web to see what it's called in English.
I'm not sure what names you are familiar with
but flounder has eyes on the right side and sole has them on the left.
Anyways, the "hirame" that we got at the market
was super delicious.
Believe me, our son and daughter just loved it
and they began to order "hirame" at sushi restaurants, oh no...
(Hirame is rather an expensive fish to eat at restaurants.)

ところ変われば in a different prefecture
This summer, we visited a prefecture called Niigata.
Niigata is a prefecture located along the Sea of Japan,
north of Toyama.
Prefectures along the Pacific side are much
more familiar to us, but since we live closer to
the Sea of Japan now, we decided to visit Niigata this time.
There are a lot to talk about Niigata, of course,
but out of all the things, I want to point out
their neat houses!!
Niigata has a harsh winter with lots of snow.
Just like here in Takayama.
It is ideal to have a garage so that they won't have
to dig out their cars on snowy days.
It is very common to have roofs over parking places in Takayama,
and here, garages stand on their own.
However, the houses in Niigata were different.
I wouldn't say majority of the houses were like the ones I found
but, I found many houses looking like the ones on the
photo below.
Houses were three stories high,
the sizes were quite huge,
and the bottom floor was their garages.
Can you tell from the photos?
I was wondering,
would that kind of houses work here in Takayama?
Perhaps, it would be harder to shovel snow off the
roofs since the height of the houses will become taller.
But wouldn't that be the same in Niigata?
Anyways,
I love watching and observing the houses in new places!!
It is interesting to find out how houses in different
places are adjusted to fit their very own environment!!

Halo
I have written a post previously about a rainbow called
the circumhorizontal arc. (rainbow)
Last month, we were able to observe an even rarer phenomenon,
when we were at the beach of Ishikawa, a prefecture along
the Sea of Japan.
We have searched what the phenomenon is called
and found out that it was Halo.
"Halo is the name for a family of optical phenomena produced by
light interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere."
- Wikipedia -
Encountering such rare phenomenons
mean that we are taking our time to observe and enjoy the skies
and we feel so happy and lucky for that.
Something wonderful is happening above you,
take your time and enjoy your skies!!

今週の刺身♪ this week's sashimi!!
We are now a big fan and a supporter of
the fish market that have opened near us.
We have been visiting the market every weekend!!
Last week we bought a huge sea bream
and baigai (Japanese babylon).
It was our first time to try "baigai."
To tell the truth, I personally enjoy cooked shellfish
rather than having them raw (sashimi).
But this one was surprisingly delicious!!
The owner will happily prepare all the fish into sashimi
or in any other way we like with no extra charges at all.
Saturday or Sunday is now a seafood day for us.
Can't wait till next weekend!!

We went fishing last week
to Noto Peninsula located in the Sea of Japan.
We are not frequent fishers
so we simply went to a fishing park
where we can rent all the utensils we need.
Our kids are brave enough to
cut the worms into tiny pieces,
so they did everything on their own
putting their own worms on their hooks.
Well, the result was
we caught 5 fish in total,
my husband got 2
and the rest got 1 each : )
What a happy ending!!
They were all such tiny fish
but we enjoyed eating them!!
We are so grateful
that both our daughter and son has grown
and that
they are able to enjoy fishing safely by the sea.
We had so much fun,
we should perhaps become more frequent fishers!!

Japanese amberjack!!!!!!!
My favorite "sashimi" is Japanese amberjack (yellowtail).
What I love about living in Takayama is that
I can find fresh amberjack sashimi
at any supermarkets nearby.
And even better news!!
A fish market just opened near our place.
Every weekend they bring fresh seafood
from the Japan Sea
and we've had seafood feasts two weeks in a roll, yay!!

In Japan, some fish are called by different names
according to their growth stage.
Yellow tail is one of them.
And interestingly, these names vary from place to place
which means, some names are unfamiliar even to us Japanese.
"Fukuragi" I found out is a name used in Hokuriku area
for yellow tail which size is around 40 to 60 cm.
In the supermarkets of Takayama,
I often find this "fukuragi" being sold.
Yesterday, I found a really fresh one,
around 50 cm in its size.
(I wonder how much it weighed.)
They even had a cutting service, so why not buy one!!
(Of course, I asked them not to throw the heads and bones away.)
I had half of the "fukuragi" cut for grilling, and half for sashimi!!
Do I need to explain what they tasted like?
No, I guess not,
should come and taste them yourself!!
Oops, I forgot to take pictures of the cooked dishes.

9/3/15
映画 movies
During the summer vacation,
we went to watch the movies.
The movie we watched was "Mininons" : )
Kids just looooooooooove Minions ever since they first watched
"Despicable Me."
The nearest movie theater is about 110 km away from our place.
That's right,
we don't have a movie theater in Takayama.
So,
it was a full one day trip all the way to Toyama.
We really need serious family meetings on picking
which movies to watch from now on.
Oh well, it doesn't matter, we got to eat
delicious SUSHI from the Japan Sea after the movies, yay!!
