中間試験 exam week

It's my daughter's exam week.

In municipal Junior High Schools in Japan
there are midterm exams and end-of-the-term exams.
The number of terms differs depending on the cities
and in her previous school in Takayama,
the school year was divided into 2 semesters,
now in Anjo, her school is divided into 3 semesters.

You move to another school,
the systems are quite different
and kids will have to adapt to the new curriculum.

And as I said,
this is now her exam week.
Since she is in her second year of the Junior High School,
teachers expect everyone to know how everything goes.

She is trying hard to prepare for the coming exam
but she told me she is a bit worried because
she doesn't know the trend of the exams if you know what I mean.
There are these certain tendencies to
what kind of questions teachers will give.

I guess it's another challenge for her.

This very well proves that test scores prove nothing.

現在娘のテスト期間中（期末）です。

一言でテスト期間と言っても
中間テスト、期末テスト、そして学校によって
範囲の設定の仕方や、出題のし方も様々です。
例えば、娘が以前通っていた高山の学校は
現在中間テスト中、何故ならあちらでは前期・後期の
二期制を採用しているからです。

娘は中学２年生ですので、周囲のみんなにとっては
一年経験した後の、二年目のチャレンジです。
娘にとっては、新しい学校での初めての試験、
全く初めてに等しいチャレンジになるわけです。
この学校や、先生の傾向なども全くわかりません。
違う教科書を使用していた１年生の頃のおさらい問題も出るようです。

それでもテストはテスト、
これで成績が決まっていくわけです。

テストスコアなんて、
ただの数字よね、
子供たちのがんばりや実力を測るもっと有効な手段があればなぁ。

何はともあれ、がんばれ～☆

運動会 sports day

In Japan, almost every school hold a sports event at least once a year,

either in spring or in autumn.

Experiencing three different elementary schools in

neighboring prefectures, it is interesting to find out 

their similarities and differences.

The decoration is always the flags!!

I wonder how this started.

I've written several posts about the sports day 

held in Takayama previously!!
The cheering competition was always so exciting

and I'm so glad my kids were able to take part in it!!

This time in our new place,

the programs were quite short.

In fact, the whole event ended in the morning

and parents didn't have to worry about preparing the 

huge bento (lunch) for the family.

This is both good and bad I guess.

Eating bento with the family I would say is the fun part 

of the big event and kids always enjoy

the gorgeous lunch!!  However, at the same time,

it is such a big burden for the mothers

having to prepare the bento.

Some mothers start preparing it from the night before!!

I kind of missed not having bento lunch during the event,

but at the same time, it was also nice to have a rather 

relaxing morning.  If I could choose, I truly do not know 

which is better.

So I guess, I'm lucky I'm able to experience both!!

As long as we make sure our kids work hard and 

do their best as well as enjoy the day,

I think it's fine whichever style.

以前、何度か高山の運動会について書きました。

子供たちが通っていた学校は毎年秋の運動会でしたが、

こちらでは春、先週末がその運動会でした。

名古屋　→　高山　→　安城

三つ目の小学校ですが、それぞれ共通点や違いがあり

おもしろいですね。

飾りは何故かどこも万国旗☆

これってどうしてなのでしょう、

理由は考えたこともありません。

高山の運動会は

赤団と白団に分かれ、

とにかく熱い応援合戦が繰り広げられ

どの競技の際にも、生徒たちがみな大声で応援をするスタイル。

この熱い運動会に参加することができて、本当に良かった。

そして、それとは打って変わって

こちらの運動会はとてもシンプルなスタイル。

午前のみの運動会でした。

午前のみということは弁当の用意が不要ということなのです。

家族で楽しむ弁当タイムがないのは寂しい、、、

でも、こんなにリラックスして運動会を迎えたのは

初めて！！！それはそれで、ありがたかったりもします。

どちらか選べます！と言われたら

どちらを選ぶのか、正直わかりません。

ということは、両方経験できた私たちってラッキー♪♪

（ちなみに名古屋は、生徒は教室で弁当タイム、でした。

本当にみんなそれぞれ）

いずれにしても、子供たちが「運動会」のために

一生懸命取り組み、精一杯がんばり、楽しんでくれているなら

それが一番ですね！！

新しい学校 new schools

Kids have started to go to their new schools.

Today was my daughter's open school and
I went to watch her English class.

I was so relieved to see her enjoy the class.
She was quite interactive with the teacher as well as other students.

She was actually saying,
"I think I kind of know how to make friends
better than the last time!!"

I guess it's my turn now.
How shall I make friends?
It's obviously more difficult than the last time.

Well, time to turn my switch on.

子供たちはそれぞれの新しい学校へ通い始めました。

今日は娘（中学生）の授業参観でした。
科目は英語。

何度か手をあげて発言したり、
周囲の子ともたくさんおしゃべりしている様子を見て一安心！

娘本人も
「友達作りが前よりもうまくなった気がする！」
ですって。あんなにも人見知りの激しい子だったのにね。

さてと、私の番です。
高山に行った時よりも難しそうだぞ、
スイッチを入れてがんばりまっす。

作文 son's essay

Just a little announcement here that my son is going to read his 

short essay on "agriculture and I" next week!

今朝の二人 kids this morning

Yep, this is the
very regular
very normal
winter scenery of Takayama!!

本日はさすがに除雪車が出動
冬の高山らしい景色になりました。

小さく見えるのが、１０歳息子の通学班
（今日もスキー教室です）

And my 13-year-old
I feel so sorry for her having to wear a skirt on such day as well.
(one of the many regulations that I'm against...
oops... I should stay quiet about it)
そしてうちの中学生
こんな雪の日も、スカートで登校します、、、気の毒。

He carries his own skis to school.
月曜日は小学校のスキー教室でした。

タカヤマガジン Takayamagazine

For the project that my son had to turn in
after his summer vacation,
he gathered information about his favorite shops in town
and made a magazine called "Takayamagazine."

I followed him as a photographer : )
Although all of them were someone we meet quite often,
it was such a pleasure throwing them questions that
we never had the chances to ask in person.
We got many interesting answers!!

Such a pity we didn't have enough time to visit more places.

夏休みの宿題について語り出したら
どれだけ時間があっても足りない私ですが、、、
今回はそれに関しては静かにしておきましょう 笑。

今回「一研究一作品」で息子が提出したものは
その名も「Takayamagazine」（タカヤマガジン）
彼が好きなお店やスポットを一冊のファイルにまとめてみました。

写真撮影隊として、同行した私ですが、
大好きでいつも通うお店も、改めてお話を伺うと
意外な言葉だったり、思っていた通りのことだったり
色々と聞くことができて、なかなかよい時間を過ごすことができました。

本当はもっとたくさんの場所を訪れたかったんですが
時間がなくて残念でした。

小学校卒業式 graduation ceremony

My daughter has finished her first six years of
compulsory education and it was her graduation ceremony yesterday.

Unlike other regions in Japan, where students wear dresses, kimonos
or suits, the six graders here wear the junior high school uniforms
on their graduation day.

Kids who had been attending school in casual dresses for six years
were all wearing their brand new school uniforms.
That already brought us to tears recalling the days
when they had just entered the elementary school at the age of six.

I was always wondering whether it is necessary to make a big fuss,
having graduation and entrance ceremonies inbetween
cumpulsory education.

However, I guess it works as a milestone, having the chances
to reset and set new goals.

We truly hope she enjoys the next three years in her new school!!

昨日は、娘の小学校卒業式でした。

この地域では、袴でもなく、スーツでもなく、
中学校で着る制服を着て卒業式に参加します。

体育館の扉が開くと
いつもはカジュアルな普段着で学校生活を送っていた子供たちが
それぞれ学ランやセーラー服で入場します。
その姿を観ただけで、すでに涙がとまりません。

義務教育の合い間に、卒業式や入学式は
果たして必要なのかな、と疑問に思ったこともありますが、
「区切り」「節目」というのは、新たな目標を立てるためにも
やはり大切なのでしょうね。

中学校三年間も、楽しく健康に過ごせますように！！

 

今年の梅 plum this year

I know there are places where cherries have bloomed already.

全国の桜の便りがちらほらと聞こえる中

Again, we are way behind.

今年もまた取り残されておりますが

We're being patient.

お利口に待つことにします。

And... the day after tomorrow
is my daughter's grauation ceremony.
Yes the day has come.

そして明後日は娘の卒業式（小学校の）。
最後のランドセル姿を写真に収めました。
泣けるなぁ。

3年5か月 3 years and 5 months

It's almost 3 years and 5 months since we came here.

My daughter was a third grader and now she's ready to
graduate "elementary school."

In Japan the compulsory education is
6 years in elementary school and 3 years in junior high school.
and elementary graduation is a big event!!

Obviously, that is why my blog is being kind of left away, forgive me.

I hope to update a report about the graduation ceremony
if there's anything unique about it at the end of the month,
plus an entrance ceremony of junior high school awaits us.

高山に引っ越して、3年と5ヶ月が経とうとしています。

三年生だった娘は間もなく小学校を卒業します。

（そうです、ブログを更新できない言い訳です　笑）

卒業、そして入学と続きますので
ブログがご無沙汰になってしまい、すみません。
冬の高山も随分観光客でにぎわうようになりましたが、
これからまた一気に増えてきます。

高山の卒業式、何か特別なことはあるのかしら。
また報告しますね。（と言っても、我が子の初めての卒業式なので
違いがわからない、、、自分のは覚えていない、、、）

雪道登校 heading for school on a snowy day

This year, too,
I, as a parent, had to walk with the school kids to school
on a cooold morning.

The morning was -9 degrees Celsius
and kids were literally skating not walking.

In the photos below, you can see the snowy path,
but what's scary is that streets where there're more car traffics,
the streets were totally icy and pedestrians and cars were all slipping.

What I found out that day was that
on a black and white crosswalks,
snow (or ice) stays unmelted on white lines
and that it's much, much more slippery.

Of course, kids don't mind slipping or even
falling down, but for us, adults, it's a different story.
I was so careful with every step I make and kids were
laughing at me : )

Anyways, I'm safely back home
and I guess I had a great experience
finding out what the kids are going through every morning!!

今年も寒～い、朝に通学団の子供たちと一緒に登校する
当番がやってきました。

気温はー９℃。
もはや、徒歩通学ではなく、滑歩通学です。

写真をご覧いただくと
雪道が写っていますが、
本当に怖いのは車道なんです。
たくさんの車が通過する事により
路面がツルツルテカテカ、
実際に車も人も滑ったり転んだりしていました。

その日初めて知ったことなんですが、
白黒の横断歩道では、黒い帯の箇所は雪（や氷）が解けやすく
白い帯上はどうしても残ってしまうので、
油断すると、白ゾーンでツルっと滑ってしまうのです。
子供たちはそれをよく分かっていて
うまく歩いていたので、びっくりでした。

まぁ、もちろん
子供たちは滑ることも転ぶことも恐れていないので
細心の注意をはらっているこちらとは
わけが違います。歩きがノロノロ過ぎて
子供たちに笑われました ＾＾

７:１５出発のキッズに合わせて準備をするのは大変ですが、
この、一年に一度の真冬同伴登校は、
子供たちの日常を再確認できる
非常にいい機会であることは間違いありません。

運動会 Sports Festival 2017

For our daughter, it was her last "sports festival" during
her elementary school, since she will be graduating next spring.

Don't ask how many times we cried that day.

We just love being at the sports festival.
And we're so thankful that we were able to
enjoy the day under a beautiful weather this year, too.

Besides the actual running and dancing that they did,
there were several big things that occurred that day
that we cried about.

My daughter was elected the leader of the "sports day operating committee"
and she had several duties to do.
Her first duty was to run the last part of the torch relay.
Her second big duty was to make a speech in front of the whole school
at the opening ceremony.

We were so proud to see her standing in front of everyone.
Believe us, we were more nervous than she was.

Also, our son was selected the team member of the "big relay"
and we obviously screamed (louder than cheering)
when it was his turn, ha-ha.

We have moved to this beautiful city 3 years ago
and we are so, so proud that our son and daughter
are both having big parts to take in such wonderful event.

６年生の娘にとって、今年は小学校最後の運動会でした。

さて私たち、一体何度涙を流したでしょうか　笑。

運動会って感動がたくさんで、毎年わくわくが止まりません。
今年も、青空の下、みんなで元気に運動会に参加できたこと、
感謝しかありません。

運動会競技の他にも、涙のわけがあったんです。

長女は今年、「運動会実行委員長」を務めました。
炬火リレーで、アンカー（最後に点火する大役）をし、
全校生徒の前で挨拶もしなければなりませんでした。

もちろん、娘より私たちの方が緊張しましたよ。

息子は、各学年の代表で構成された「選手リレー」に
参加させていただきました。

高山に引っ越して、約３年、
娘も息子も、しっかりと自分たちの居場所と役割を見つけて
活躍する姿に感動した運動会でした。

七夕の町並み old town during star festival

The 38-days summer vacation for
elementary school kids is ending this weekend here in Takayama
and I've only updated my blog 6 times during the vacation.

Well, it kind of proves that I have spent my time fully
with my kids which is good, but there are lots more
I want to do with them!!

Anyways,
starting next week, I'm hoping to find more time
to update the blog.

For today, I'm putting up the photos of
the old town during the "tanabata, a star festival"
which is celebrated on the 7th of July commonly,
but here, on the 7th of August!!

The bamboo decorations are displayed along the street
only for 3 days!!  Aren't they beautiful?

高山の夏休みが間もなく終わろうとしています。
夏休み中、ブログの更新がたったの６回、
ということが判明、、、

それだけ、キッズと向き合って過ごせた、
ということにしておきましょう　笑

今後は少しずつ夏休み中のことなども含め
更新頻度を上げられたらな、と考えています。

今日は
古い町並みの七夕の写真を載せたいと思います。
この七夕飾り、たったの３日間で終了してしまいます。
そんな貴重な時に町並みを歩くことができるなんて
贅沢だなぁ。

海の中パーティ＆かき氷パーティ Under the Sea Party & Shaved Ice Party

Summer Vacation for school kids has finally started.
The vacation this year started from July 21st
and a new semester will start on the 28th of August
which is about 5 weeks in total.

I'm sorry for not reporting that much about
local things or events recently.
I've been quite busy spending my time with
kids these days.

On the very first day of their vacation
we planned two different parties,
under the sea party & shaved ice party!!

The parties were carried out in English and
we planned them as an introduction to the "tourists interviews"
which will be starting tomorrow!!

We had such wonderful time with sweet kids
and we're all so excited about the coming interviews as well!!

高山の学校でも夏休みがスタートしました。
今年は7月21日～8月27日までの約５週間です。

最近「高山について」の記事が書けていません。
にごめんなさい。
キッズの休みがスタートし、「キッズごと」で
少々バタバタしております。

夏休み最初の日は、
海の中パーティ＆かき氷パーティを開催しました！

明日からスタートする、お休み恒例の
「外国人観光客突撃インタビュー」の練習も含め
英語でのパーティでした！

かわいいキッズと賑やかな時間を過ごしましたよ。
明日からのインタビューも楽しみだぁ。
