It snowed quite a lot yesterday considering it's only November!!

But at the same time,
it was sooooo beautiful!

It was a wonderful, sunny day yesterday after the snow.
Even though it was my precious day off after the busiest month,
I just could not resist taking off to enjoy the scenic views.

昨日は貴重な家事日和、
久しぶりのお休みで、
のんびり＆家事で一日を過ごす予定でしたが、、、

と町へ飛んでいきました。

七夕の町並み old town during star festival

The 38-days summer vacation for
elementary school kids is ending this weekend here in Takayama
and I've only updated my blog 6 times during the vacation.

Well, it kind of proves that I have spent my time fully
with my kids which is good, but there are lots more
I want to do with them!!

Anyways,
starting next week, I'm hoping to find more time
to update the blog.

For today, I'm putting up the photos of
the old town during the "tanabata, a star festival"
which is celebrated on the 7th of July commonly,
but here, on the 7th of August!!

The bamboo decorations are displayed along the street
only for 3 days!!  Aren't they beautiful?

高山の夏休みが間もなく終わろうとしています。
夏休み中、ブログの更新がたったの６回、
ということが判明、、、

それだけ、キッズと向き合って過ごせた、
ということにしておきましょう　笑

今後は少しずつ夏休み中のことなども含め
更新頻度を上げられたらな、と考えています。

今日は
古い町並みの七夕の写真を載せたいと思います。
この七夕飾り、たったの３日間で終了してしまいます。
そんな貴重な時に町並みを歩くことができるなんて
贅沢だなぁ。

忍者！ Ninja!

You know what?
Since we live near a popular tourist spot,
there are lots of funny things we can do!!

Last weekend,
we enjoyed a family dinner out near the old town area
and our kids did a shuriken throw!!

Shuriken is a weapon used by Ninja!!

Of course, the ones that our kids threw
were rubber shurikens.

My daughter hit two enemy ninjas
and my son got none...oh no.

My son is sooooooooooooooooo upset
that he said he's going to make his own practice kit, ha-ha.

観光地に住む私たち、
町へ繰り出すと
おもしろい場所がいくつかあります。

先週末は
町まで徒歩で出かけ、家族飲み会！
帰り道に「手裏剣道場？」に寄ってきました。

もちろん、投げるのはゴム製の手裏剣。

娘は忍者を二人倒し、
息子はゼロ、、、。

悔し過ぎた彼は、
自分で同様のセットを作って
練習をすることに決めたそうです、、、ハハハ。

骨董うどん皿 an old udon bowl

I love to collect dishes.
My collection is not that huge
and I have no knowledes at all about antiques
but I just love them!!

There are many antique shops in the old town area.
I have shown the tiny sake cups that I bought before.
They are so tiny that you will have to pour sake every 2 seconds : )

A couple of weeks I go, I found the most beautiful bowl.
I wasn't  sure what they were, but I simply fell in love with its color and its shape.
The shop owner told me that the bowl was designed to eat udon.

The bowl is only about half the size of present udon bowl.
Is it because people in the old days had smaller appetite?
I'm not sure but I'm using it for a completely non-Japanese food.
Avocado & tomato salad, ha-ha.

I should cook something more traditional!!

But I love the color contrast.
What would you put in such beautiful bowl?

器が好きなんです。
決してたくさん収集しているわけではありません。
知識も全くありません。
でも好きなんです。

街にはたくさんの骨董屋があります。
以前おちょこをいくつか買いました。
とても小さくて、2秒おきにお酒を注がないと間に合いません　笑。

数週間前、素敵な器を見つけました。
何に使われていたものか、不明でしたがとにかく色と形を気に入り購入。
お店の方に尋ねると、うどん皿だったということが分かりました。

現在の麺用の器の半分くらいのサイズなんです。（深さが）
昔の人は小食だったのかな？
などなど100年以上前の食卓をイメージしながら
全くもって和風じゃないものを並べてみました。
アボカド＆トマトのサラダ、　あはは。

もっと和風なものを調理しなくては。

でも、意外とこの色のコントラストが好きだったりもします。
みなさんならば、何を入れますか？

特例ガイド業務していました tour guiding!!

I had been doing my tour guiding job for several days.
It's in the middle of the "Golden Week," remember?

The old town area and the morning market are packed with tourists.

I went to the station several times to pick up my client
and I start thinking, is this Japan?

Cherry blossoms have ended and fresh green season has come!!

The mornings are still quite cold but as soon as the sun goes up high,
it is probably the best season to take a stroll around.
Beside the fact that it is in the middle of the Golden Week,
no wonder there are so many tourists in the city.

The best thing about doing this job is that I get to share thoughts
with so many different people from around the world.
Chat about each other's everyday life,
discuss the economic problems of the countries,
complain about the politics and so forth.

Being asked about our way of living,
our culture, our religion, our houses,
it makes me stop, think and rethink about
what we eat and do without even noticing.

I was complaining about how
rules and regulations are too strict at schools and societies in Japan.
I was complaining that we should live a freer life
not minding too much about the "others."

But my clients tell me everyday,
how impressed they are with the politeness and the patience that we, Japanese, have,
and how well treated they are everywhere they go,
and how clean the town, the public facilities are
and so forth.

Strengths and weaknesses,
when one changes,
the other simply turns around, I guess.

Which is better, I don't know.
But the strength of Japan, I believe is quite unique,
we should probably keep them and reinforce them even.

I just love discussing endlessly about things that cannot be solved.

ここ数日間は、特例ガイド業務をしておりました。
ゴールデンウィークですから！！

古い町並みも朝市も人で溢れかえっています。

駅にお客様を迎えに行く度に、
ここは日本？と疑問に思ってしまうほどの外国人観光客の数なのです。

桜は終わり、新緑シーズンに突入です。

朝はまだまだ寒い高山ですが、
陽が高くなる頃には散歩に最適な気温、
一番いい季節なのかもしれません。
ここまで大勢の観光客が訪れるのは
ゴールデンウィークが理由だけではないということですね。

以前もお伝えしたように
この仕事で一番素敵なこと、
それは世界からいらっしゃる様々な国の方々と
普段の生活について、
時には経済の問題について
政治に関する不平不満について
ニュースには載らないことについて意見交換できることです。

普段、気にも留めないようなことに関して
聞かれ、驚かれ、
こちらも日々の何気ないことについて
疑問を投げかけあれこれ考えるようになるわけです。

日本での生活って
規律や規則がたくさんあり過ぎて
人に迷惑をかけない、我慢する、
周囲の目を気にする
そんなの窮屈
もっと「個」を大切にするべきでは、
他人の目を気にせず自由に生きたい
そんな風によく考えます。

でも、
毎日のようにお客様から言われるのです。
秩序があり
誰と話しても礼儀正しくて
我慢強くて心が温かい、
こんな国は他にない、
僕たちは自分の国が恥ずかしくなる時があるよ。
街もとても美しい。
そんなに褒めてもらったら照れちゃうわ、
というくら褒めてくださいます。

規律や規則を緩めたなら、
回りの目を気にしなくなったのなら、
長所と短所は紙一重、、、ですね。

どちらがいいのかな、
わかりません。
でも、日本のいいところは
やっぱりどこもマネのできない特別なもの。
より強化させなくてはいけないくらいかもしれません。

答えの出ない、こんなことについて
あれこれおしゃべりすることが大好きです。

後四日 four more days

Four more days and the official sake brewery tour of
the backyards are ending.

Last year, we only had the chance to attend two of the six breweries.
This year, we were fortunate that we were able to visit five!!

We were explained that, since all six breweries are located close by
using the same underground water,
rather than making sake having similar features,
they are working hard to produce sake with
UNIQUE and DIFFERENT flavor and taste.

It is very interesting to listen to stories of each breweries.
Some still produce sake in an unchanged style from the old days,
some are using new utensils and machines to be more productive.

Also, it is wonderful that we are able to taste the freshly brewed sake!!

Please, even if you are not a sake lover,
don't forget to challenge sampling some sake in Takayama.

It is just so amazing to actually taste and experience that
each and every sake has its unique flavor and taste.
And they're not just different, each and every one of them
has been produced with the greatest care and effort
by the brewing master and they are definitely worth trying!!

後四日で、「酒蔵巡り」が終了します。

昨年は、二か所しか回れませんでしたが、
今年は幸運にも五か所を巡るくとができました。

六軒の造り酒屋は、町並み内に隣接しているため、
「高山の日本酒の特徴はこんな感じ」という統一感よりも
それぞれの酒造が、いかに「特徴的な味」を作り出すかに
力を入れているそうです。

それぞれの酒造の、それぞれの話は大変興味深く、
昔ながらの製法を続けるところ、
道具も機会も最新式を取り入れているところ、
とにかく勉強になります。

そして、もちろん説明の最後に頂ける
新酒の試飲も楽しみのひとつ！！
（これが目的だったりして？）

高山へお越しの方、
日本酒党でない方も、酒蔵を訪れてみてください。

実際に「酒」を造っている場所、
その独特な雰囲気の中で味わう一口は
格別であり、一本一本の違いや
杜氏のこだわりを実際に体験することができます。

今月の素敵ウィンドウ the window decoration of this month

I've written a post about the beautiful
display window near old town before.

This is how it looks today!!

I love the plants as well as the tiny snowmen lined in front of a plant.

By the way, isn't it difficult to take photos of things behind windows?
Everything reflects on the window including myself...

以前、町並み近くの「窓」について書いたことがあります。

今は、こんな感じです！！

それぞれの鉢、植物、そして置物（雪だるま）、全てにこだわりを感じます。

ところで、窓の向こうの物を撮影するのって
本当に難しいですね、、、。
どうしても色々なものが反射して写ってしまいます。（自分自身も、、、）

酒種あんぱん red bean paste roll made of sake yeast

"The Blue Penguin Bakers" is a bakery
located near the old town area of Takayama.

Out of MANY bakeries in Takayama,
this is one of the best, and it is simply impossible not to stop by
when I'm nearby.

February 4th was its 2nd Anniversary,
and they are selling special anpan (red bean paste roll)
just for three days.
(unfortunately, today, Feb. 6, is the last day)

When baking "bread" began to spread in Japan more than 130 years ago,
the very first bakery, Kimuraya, began using sake yeast mash (or yeast starter)
for baking anpan!!

Since Takayama is a city with many sake breweries,
The Blue Penguin Bakers is now baking special anpan using
sake yeast starter from one of the breweries!!

Believe me, the anpan does have a nice "sake aroma"
when first put into mouth!!
And they blend perfectly with the smell and taste of anpan!!
My children said, they can also sense it and they love the anpan.
(although they usually don't like the smell of sake)

I am definitely going to ask the baker to sell them again
whenever the sake yeast is available!!
Wouldn't it be a great snack to have in Takayama?
A collaboration of a historical sake brewery and a skillfull bakery!!


町並み近くにブルーペンギンベーカーズはあります。

実は高山にはレベルの高いベーカリーがたくさんあるのです。
その中でもブルーペンギンベーカーズは、１、２を争う大好きなベーカリーです。
近くまで行った時には、足が勝手にお店に向いてしまいます。

２月４日は
オープンニ周年の記念日だったそうです。
その記念に、ある「特別なアンパン」が売られているのです。
（と言ってもごめんなさい、今日までだそうですが、、、）

１３０年以上前、パンが日本に広まり始めた頃、
日本最古のベーカリー「木村屋総本店」が
日本酒の酒種でパン生地を発酵させる技術を開発したそうです。
（と、ブルーペンギンベーカーズのFBに書いてありました）

高山にはたくさんの酒造があり、
その酒造で手に入れた「酒種」を使用して
三日間、限定で
「酒種あんぱん」が売られているのです！！

この酒種あんぱん、
口に入れた瞬間に、ほんのり日本酒のような香りがします♪
そして、それが「あんぱん」と完璧にマッチしているのです。
普段はお酒のニオイをいやがる子供たちも
「お酒のニオイがするけどおいしい！！」と
あんぱんを気に入った様子です。

酒種が手に入るシーズンは、是非また販売していただきたいな。
歴史ある酒造とおいしいベーカーリーのコラボレーション、
高山の「新しい味」になりそう！！

煎餅焼き体験 hand grilling rice crackers

Last weekend, we enjoyed touring around the old town area
with our friend from Nagoya!!

Among the many things we did together,
there was one thing which were even new to us!!
For the very first time,
we tried grilling rice crackers!!

Takayama is famous for salted and soy sauce flavored rice crackers.
Hard type rice crackers that can be seen everywhere throughout Japan
are also made in the region,
but the distinct rice crackers are those with such soft texture.

This time, we enjoyed grilling these soft type crackers in a tiny
senbei (rice cracker) oven.

Of course the sizes varies and some are even out of shape : )
but that's the most fun part of "experiencing!!"

No need to explain,
how joyous our snack time was on that day!!

By the way,
we didn't forget to taste the hard type senbei as well!!

週末、名古屋から友人が遊びに来てくれ
古い町並み散策をいつもより賑やかに
楽しみました。

実は私たちも初めてだったのが
「煎餅焼き体験」
連れて行ってあげた、
というよりも、こちらも
存分に楽しませてもらっちゃいました。

高山で有名な
塩せんべい・醤油せんべいは
いわゆる赤ちゃん煎餅のような
ふわふわな食感の
独特な煎餅です。

このタイプの煎餅を
専用のコンロで焼き上げるのです。

もちろん、サイズも焼き上がりもバラバラ
でも「自分で焼く」
これに勝るスパイスはありませんよね！！

おやつタイムがどれだけ盛り上がったかは
説明するまでもないでしょう　笑。

そうそう、堅い食感の
手焼き煎餅も忘れずにいただきました～！！

お正月の装い new year's displays

The old town and the markets were filled

not just with tourists but also with locals,

enjoying the joyful moments of the 

brand new year of 2016 that has just started!!

We had a lovely stroll among the crowded town

buying some new year goodies here and there!!

Didn't I do a good job taking shots with 

no single person on the pictures?

(I was reaaaaaaaaally quick!!)

正月の町並みに足を運んでみたら、

観光客だけでなく、

新年のお祝いムードを楽しもうと地元民も

たくさん集まっていました。

あちこちでつまみ食いをしながら

私たちも町並み散歩を楽しんできましたよ。

町はかなり混雑していたんです！！

でも、写真を見る限り

「人影無し」ですよね。

そうです、かなりタイミングを待ち

猛スピードでシャッターを切ったのでした。

（そのせいで、あまりいい写真が撮れませんでしたが、

見事に誰も写り込まず自己満足　笑）
