Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

Cheers to new findings!!

In early January, we went to stay at an onsen-yado (an inn with onsen)
in Shinhotaka Onsen (an onsen town surrounded by Northern Japan Alps)

This was when I wrote about the hantai tamago if you remember.

Normally, Shinhotaka Onsen is an area with heavy snow,
so we were looking forward to having yukimi onsen
(enjoy outdoor onsen with snowy scenery)
but unfortunately, there were no snow at that time.

The yado (inn) was a western style yado
and since we were the only guest on that day,
the yado kindly prepared us a room with four beds!!
Can you imagine how excited our kids were?

Since we were the only guests,
the lobby was all for ourselves,
the restaurant was, too,
and the best part was
all three rotenburo (outdoors onsen) were for us!!

We took turns and enjoyed all three of them for at least
three times each including early morning onsen!!

The onsen itself was simply wonderful but the view was amazing as well.
Hope you enjoy the photos!!

Hirayu Waterfalls Winter Festival

On Sunday Night, we went to the Winter Festival of Hirayu Waterfalls.

Hirayu is an onsen (hot spring) place located at the northern foot of Mount Norikura.
The place is about 1250 m above sea level and there are many
ryokans (Japanese style inns) and hot spring facilities.

After enjoying the greatest onsen, we went to a festival held at Hirayu Waterfalls.

During winter, not all, but the waterfall freezes partially, and they're lighting up
the waterfalls during this festival.

The paths that lead to the waterfalls were darker than we had imagined.
And they were so icy and slippery that many people including our son
were slipping and falling down everywhere : )

At an open space near the waterfalls,
free amazake (sweet Japanese drink made from fermented rice),
zenzai (sweet red bean soup with rice cake), and beef tendon soup were given.
The temperature was about -6 degrees Celcius at that time,
so cold but these warm drinks kept us alive!!

By the time we arrived to the waterfalls,
we were no longer cold both because we had to walk up the slope
and also because of the warm drinks!!

The waterfalls were lighted and appeared beautifully in the darkness of the night.

The festival ended for the night with some beautiful fireworks that bloomed
in the dark chilly sky!!

It was such a heartwarming event
that took place in a cold and freezing night.

はんたい玉子 hantai tamago (the other way around onsen egg)

We visited the "Shinhotaka Onsen" a few days ago.
I would love to talk about this onsen later on
but today's post is about the
onsen tamago (hot spring egg)  we had on our way.

About three minutes from the Hirayu Bus Station,
there is a small souvenir shop called "Tsuruya Shoten."
There, we can get an onsen tamago (egg) called
hantai tamago (the other way around egg)

Typically, an onsen tamago has a soft egg white
and a soft egg yoke as well.
Depending on the temperature and the length
the egg is being soaked in the hot spring,
they all come out differently.

It is typical to see an egg with a soft yoke and a hard white,
we usually call them a hanjuku tamago but this
particular "the other way around egg" has a surprisingly soft egg white
and a hard egg yoke.

The shop lady told us that the temperature of the
hot spring is 70 degrees Celsius.

The coagulation temperature of egg white is 80 degrees Celsius
where as the coagulation temperature of egg yoke is 70 degrees.
Since the temperature of the hot spring is around 70 degrees,
the yoke gets cooked and becomes solid while the white stays soft.

We brought our own salt as well as special spices to enjoy the eggs!!!!!!

Believe me!!  You can eat at least three of them in a second!!
The eggs have their own onsen flavor and they are
sooooooooooooooooooo delicious!!

By the way, the price is 50 yen for an egg!!!
Don't miss it if you go to Hirayu Onsen!!

We went to Yotsuba Cafe near Fukuchi Onsen today!!
Last time we visited the place was half a year ago!!

Yotsuba Cafe is now full of beautiful autumn colors!!

Everything we ordered including his hand dripped coffee were
awesome and delicious!!

The place is going to be covered in thick blankets of snow.
I don't think we can get to the place during winter.

We'll see ya next spring!!

Yotsuba Cafe

About 40 minutes drive from home,
there is a cafe called "Yotsuba"
near the Fukuchi Onsen town.

While waiting for our lunch
we couldn't resist stepping outside!!
The view from the mini garden was just amazing.

We loooooved the tone of the interior,
relaxing and feel-at-home atmosphere there.

The food was wonderful and most of all
the coffee was soooo delicious.
They grind the coffee beans each and every time
the coffees are being ordered.
And they take their time,
to drip a cup of perfect coffee.

It is definitely a place to visit when you are around
Hirayu or Fukuchi Onsen.

Fukuchi Onsen (hot spring)

Last week, we went to Fukuchi Onsen (hot spring) located
a little north of Hirayu.

It is a small town with many Onsen Ryokans (Japanese inns).

Since we took a day trip,
we chose a tiny onsen called "Isurugi no yu."

I wouldn't say, this particular Isurugi no yu has the greatest bathing facility.
But the people were nice and the tatami room was so cozy to rest after
taking a long bath.
It certainly is a "good old nostalgic Japanese atmosphere place."

We also enjoyed taking a walk along a stream nearby.
Just love this fresh green season!!

Hirayu Onsen (Hot Spring)

"Hirayu Onsen (Hot Spring)" is located 40km east
of Takayama railway station.
It took us about 40 min. by car.

Hirayu Onsen sits right in between "Norikuradake" and "Yakedake."
The height is 1300m above sea level
and there was already snow everywhere at the end of November.

There is a ski run in the area
and a short hiking track to a waterfall,
so it's not just a little onsen town for the elderlies.

Like we say Hirayu's got such "ii oyu (a fine water)"
that we could still smell the sulfur after we got home.
We would love to visit the place often BUT
because of the snow we're not sure if we'll make it
during the winter season.
We'll see.
