Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

Cheers to new findings!!

"Panove" is a bakery located in Takayama.
The name Panove is a coined word made from
Pan (bread in Japanese) and Love!

The bakery is located in the non-touristic, residential area
and you can tell the bakery is absolutely loved by the locals.
They continuously challenge baking new products as well as
there are uncountable numbers of their standard items.
They keep their website updated and you can easily
find their baking schedules so you will find out exactly when to
find your favorite bread!!

So many times we ordered their delicious sandwiches for our parties.
So many times we booked their baguette for cheese fondue dinners.
So many times we went on a picnic bringing Panove's just baked treats.
So many times we walked all the way
just to get their sweet bread for our snack time.

I said the bakery is in the non-touristic area
but luckily it is not far away from the station.
Do visit Panove and find your favorite bread!!

Actually, we have asked Panove to send us a packet of bread
all the way to Anjo, Aichi and they happily did for us!!
You can order their bread online as well.
Yay, we received their "Love" just as the name of the shop.
The bakery is full of love by the shop keepers and their staff.
And of course, we just cannot stop loving their bread!!

Please go try the sasa dango if you are coming to Takayama
in summer or autumn.
Sasa dango is a dumpling on a skewer with sweet red bean paste
wrapped with fresh bamboo leaf.

It is sold at a shop called "Matsumoto-ya."
Here is a link to the post I have written previously.

I am simply in love with this dango.

It looks beautiful
and it tastes beautiful!!

The sweetness is just right.
The texture is so soft and chewy.

Be sure to get there in the morning.
And be sure to eat them right away!!

I am so in love with the sweet lady who sells the dango as well.

Fukutaro, our favorite snack place

There's this dango shop at the north end of the Miyagawa Morning Market
called "Fukutaro."
By the way, dango is a dumpling on a skewer and I guess it is correct to say
that it is one of the most popular snack among the locals.

I have written several posts about this shop previously.

Fukutaro

Dango and Goheimochi

We love their dango.
We love their goheimochi.
We love their shaved ice.
We even love their ramen!!

We also enjoyed the atmosphere of the shop.

If you feel like resting in a cozy snack shop,
don't miss the place!!

By the way, the syrups of their shaved ice are all handmade.
I'm sure you are going to have a difficult time deciding which one to have.
Enjoy!!

Lovely "zenzai" (rice cake in warm sweet red bean paste soup)
I know it doesn't sound at all delicious,
but trust us, they are super tasty!!

The second photo is from a cafe run by a local lady.
This whole set plus a cup of coffee is
served just for 900 yen!!!
I'm not telling you where it is.
Come and find the place :)

Dango and Goheimochi

If you are coming to Takayama,
don't  leave without trying the two,
Dango & Gohei mochi.

They are both made of rice.

Dango is dumplings on a skewer made with rice flour.
You will find dango everywhere in Japan,
but the one here is particularly soft and delicious!!

The uniqueness of the dango here is that
many are flavored just with soy sauce.
In other regions, it is likely that dango is flavored with something sweet.

Gohei mochi is also delicious and you should
definitely try the "egoma flavored gohei mochi."
Egoma is perilla seeds and the seed contains omega 3 oil.
There is a shop called Fukutaro nearby where I work
and they have the most delicious egoma flavored gohei mochi!!

When you are traveling,
you should always give it a try
and challenge the local taste!!
There is a lot to learn from them even if they aren't your favorite!!
Food relates directly to the cultures, don't you think?

The dates that we picked last week
have turned into sweet & delicious compote!!

今年もなつめシーズン dates are in season

Take a walk around the town for several minutes and
you will find date trees here and there.
In case you don't know what the trees look like,
I will post their photos below.
(I think I have called them "jujubes" but
it seems the name "dates" are more commonly used)

In spring you will find lots of bees flying about
and starting September,
you will find lots of fruit hanging from their twigs.

The locals love to cook them sweet with sugar
and a bit to soy sauce.

This year, we were invited to join the picking of the fruit!!

Such a precious experience!!

Four years ago, we came to this land
and we knew no one.
Now we have uncountable friends
and close friends who are almost like our relatives.
We feel so grateful.  Arigatou Gozaimasu.
