カタツムリ～～♪ snaaaaaaaails♪

My kids love bugs and little creatures!!
I do, too!!

Whenever we take a walk,
we observe closely at the plants.
We look closely at the plants and their leaves.

If we find holes in the leaves
we carefully flip the leaves over!!

Today,
we found so many tiny snails.
So many!!
So cute!!

And a beautiful butterfly.
I was able to take a great photo of it♪

我が子たち、
虫や小さな生き物が大好きです！！
何を隠そう私も！！

散歩をする時は
道端の草花を
じーーーーーーっと観察します。
草花の葉も観察します。

葉っぱに穴を見つけたら
そーーーっと裏返します。

今日発見したのは
チビチビカタツムリ。
たくさん！！
かわいい！！

そしてキレイな蝶にも出会いました。
上手に写真が撮れてヤッタ♪

朴葉寿司 sushi in magnolia leaf

You can find Magnolia Trees everywhere in Takayama.

Hoba Miso is probably one of the most popular local cuisine here.
Sweet miso is put on top of a dried Magnolia Leaf
and it is placed on a tiny clay cooking stove for grilling.

At this season, the locals enjoy making Hoba Sushi,
sushi wrapped inside fresh Magnolia Leaf.

In the old days,
this itself was a bento box for a farmer.

Farmers prepared sushi rice (vinegared rice)
plus, several ingredients such as marinated fish,
pickles, cooked shiitake mushrooms
Japanese pepper, Japanese ginger
and so on to add flavors to the sushi
and wrapped it with a fresh Magnolia leaf
to bring with them for lunch!!
Everything was pickled, marinated with vinegar (including the sushi rice)
and placed in the leaf to prevent from bacteria.

How smart
and how ecological!!

高山では
あちこちで
朴ノ木をみかけます。

朴葉味噌はあまりにも有名です。

今の時期は
新鮮な葉を使い、朴葉寿司を作ります。

朴葉寿司は
昔の「弁当」だったそうです。

酢漬けの魚や、野菜、
山椒、みょうが、
そしてシイタケの佃煮など
好みのものを酢飯にのせ
朴葉で包み、畑や田んぼへ持って行ったそうです。

酢と朴葉の殺菌効果を利用した
完璧且つエコな弁当ですよね。

かえるとあそぼ had fun with the frogs

There is a beautiful flower garden called "Hana no mori" in Kokufu-town,
about 20 minutes drive from our place.

I have written about this place a year ago.

Last year, we went to enjoy the Japanese primroses,
but this year, we went to see the bamboo lilies (Japanese lilies).

Most people visit this wonderful garden to observe and enjoy the flowers.

BUT
for my kids and probably for me as well,
our main purpose of visiting the place is to enjoy the "creatures" that
live in the garden!!

We did some frog fishing, too!!
(Don't worry, we didn't succeed, ha-ha)

There were so many more beautiful and interesting birds and insects
that we didn't/couldn't take photos of!!

It's not a huge place but we could spend the whole afternoon there!!

家から20分ほどドライブしたところに
「花の森」はあります。

ちょうど一年前、ここについて記事を書きました。

昨年はクリン草を楽しんできましたが、
今年はササユリのシーズンでした。

ほとんどの方は、この花々を楽しみにここを訪れるんだと思います。

私たちに限っては別の目的が！！
子供たちと、そして私は
ここに住む「生物」を楽しみに行くのです。

かえる釣りもしちゃいました。
（もちろん、つかまえてはいません　笑）

写真に写さなかった（写せなかった）美しくおもしろい鳥や昆虫もたくさんいます。

広大な敷地、というわけでもありませんが、
半日は優に過ごせる魅力的な公園です♪

苔 moss

"Moss," what a topic for a blog post : )

Is it because it snows a lot here in Takayama?
Trees and rocks probably remain damp,
or perhaps the average humidity is higher than other places,

we see mosses everywhere.

on rocks
on walls

everywhere

and we think they are all so beautiful!!

My daughter and I especially love
observing the different kinds
and actually touching the mosses to
feel what they are like :)
We are competing to find the fluffiest mosses of all!!

今日のタイトルは「苔」、
ブログタイトルが苔って、、、。

雪が積もって
あちこちが湿っているからでしょうか、
純粋に年間の平均湿度が高いのでしょうか、

苔がたくさん

木の幹
岩
壁

あちこち苔だらけ

そして、とっても美しいと思うのは私たちだけ？

とくに娘と私、苔観察が大好きなんです。
そして、あの苔、この苔を触っては
「これが一番ふわふわ～～♪」と競いあっているのです　笑。

マムシグサ Jack-in-the-pulpit

On the way back home after the river walk on May 3rd,
we took the mountain route and
enjoyed observing the plants and flowers!!

It's always fun to take photos of the beautiful flowers,
look for the names and learn about it afterwords with kids.

5月3日の川散歩の帰りは山ルートで
（かなり大回りなルートなんですが）
植物の観察をエンジョイしました。

写真を撮り、見つけた植物について
帰宅してから子供たちと調べるのも
楽しみのひとつです。

川散歩 river stroll

We went for a stroll by the river today.

Walking time is my communication time with the kids.
"Like mother, like daughter/son"
We are both so talkative!!
Our conversations go on and on about
our everyday things, about what we see,
about school life, about friends,
about what they want to try baking. and so forth.

We also like to observe the things we see,
things like flowers, plants, trees, insects, birds, sky and clouds!!

And of course, whenever we find food,
we never forget to try them!!
Today, we tried crepes!
Oh no, I forgot to take photos.
I had a salad crepe and a glass of red wine,
my daughter chose a kiwi and cream,
my son, a crunchy caramel with cream.

We took the mountain route on the way home
and the total steps were 16,000 today.

I took many photos,
so I will put the latter half on my next post!!

ゴールデンウィーク真っ只中、
本日は川散歩に出かけました。

散歩時間が子供たちとのコミュニケーションタイムです。
娘も息子も私に似ておしゃべりです　笑。
毎日のこと、目に飛び込んできた何かについて、
学校のこと、友達のこと、
次に作ってみたいお菓子について、などなど。

花や草木、昆虫や鳥、空と雲の観察も
欠かしません。

そしてもちろん、
おいしそうなものを見つけたら
すぐにチャレンジします♪
本日は初めてクレープ屋さんに立ち寄ってみました。
あ、写真を撮るのを忘れました、、、。
私は、サラダクレープと赤ワイン、
娘はキウイ
息子はキャラメルクランチとクリームのクレープでした。

帰り道は小高い山コースを選び
全部で16000歩！！

写真をたくさん撮ったので、
後半の写真は次回のブログにて紹介します。

田植え rice planting

One afternoon last week,

a woman in the neighbors let us experience

rice planting!!

Muddy but fun!!

Since the rice field is located right next to where we live,

we now enjoy watching and observing how "our rice plants"

（no! wrong! "the rice that we planted") are doing, ha-ha.

先週、外で子供たちが遊んでいたら突然

「田植えしてみるか～」と

近所の女性が声をかけてくださいました！！

どろんこ、でも楽しい♪

この田んぼは、家のすぐ隣の田んぼなので

「私たちの苗」、、、いや違いますね、

「私たちが植えた苗」を日々観察して楽しんでいます　笑。

雪割草 a mealy primrose

I found a lovely plants stall in the Miyagawa Morning Market.

They had mini-bonsai and cute plants with soothing pale colors.

There I met a plant called Yukiwarisou.

Later, I found that it is a kind of mealy primrose.

Yuki means snow.

Wari or waru  means to break through.

Sou means grass or plants.

Yukiwarisou therefore means 

plants that break through snow.
Despite its delicate appearance,
the plant is quite tough　:)

This mealy primrose is typically found in wet, mountainous areas.

And the flowers bloom during March and April.

The woman at the stall told me

not to give too much water.

A-ha!!  This is definitely my kind of plant!!

I decided to take one home and is now

lightening up our Hina Dolls.

How lovely!!

宮川朝市で鉢植えを扱う素敵なお店を見つけました。
ミニ盆栽や淡いかわいいお花たちがたくさん。

ここで初めて「雪割草」に出会いました。

その名の通り、この時期に
雪を割るようにして咲き出す
見た目ほど繊細ではなく
意外にもたくましい（笑）花だそうです。

この雪割草は湿った山地に多く生息するそうで
3月～4月に花を咲かせます。

うまく育てるコツは
水をあげ過ぎないことだそうです。

まさしく、私にピッタリの花！！
一鉢連れて帰ることにしました。
今は玄関のお雛様を
より華やかに彩ってくれています。
ああ、かわいい♪
