団子と五平餅 Dango and Goheimochi

If you are coming to Takayama,
don't  leave without trying the two,
Dango & Gohei mochi.

They are both made of rice.

Dango is dumplings on a skewer made with rice flour.
You will find dango everywhere in Japan,
but the one here is particularly soft and delicious!!

The uniqueness of the dango here is that
many are flavored just with soy sauce.
In other regions, it is likely that dango is flavored with something sweet.

Gohei mochi is also delicious and you should
definitely try the "egoma flavored gohei mochi."
Egoma is perilla seeds and the seed contains omega 3 oil.
There is a shop called Fukutaro nearby where I work
and they have the most delicious egoma flavored gohei mochi!!

When you are traveling,
you should always give it a try
and challenge the local taste!!
There is a lot to learn from them even if they aren't your favorite!!
Food relates directly to the cultures, don't you think?

高山に来たら、絶対に食べて欲しいのが
やはり、お団子と五平餅！

こちらに来て４年、
一体何本のお団子を食べたことでしょう 笑。

最初の頃にも書きましたが、
こちらの「みたらし」はシンプルな醤油味、
砂糖は入っていないので、イメージとしては
焼きおにぎりのようです。
これがハマる味なんです。。

そして、エゴマの五平餅も忘れないでね！
職場の近くにある「福太郎」さんの五平餅は絶品です。

旅に出たら、
苦手そうなものでも
何でも食べてみるべし！
そこから学ぶ事も多いですよね。
食と文化は切っても切り離せませんから。

始まりました、ほうば寿司シーズン♪ it's in season now!!

The season for "Sushi in Magnolia Leaf" has started!!
We can get fresh leaves of Magnolia Leaves at local markets now.

We made some at home last night.
Since they were made with leftovers from the cooking studio, where I work,
I didn't have to prepare anything.

I'm going to give it a try from scratch the next time!!

具をのせただけ、、、。

今年は、具の準備からチャレンジしてみよう！

春の高山祭 2018 Takayama Spring Festival

The weather of spring in Japan is the most unstable.
One day, it becomes very cold like winter
and the day after it becomes warm, or even hot, and bright like summer.
Many days are windy and even stormy.

That is also why it is fun to predict when the
cherries will come to a full bloom.

Everyone in the neighbors will start talking
"hi, it's a warm day today."
"good morning, it's so cold today."
"Hello, I heard the cherries have just started to bloom."

Our chat will always start out with how the weather is.

The Spring Festival; therefore, is very likely to rain.
Considering all the preparations that the locals are doing,
it seems very sad, but that is probably why
the festival is so precious and worthy.

This year, too
the night festival was canceled and several events were
canceled as well due to rain.
But, look at the photos that I have taken!!
We had beautiful sunshine at the end and we were
all able to enjoy the collaboration of festival floats and the cherries!!

日本の春は天気が安定しません。
真冬の寒さが訪れた翌日には
春を通り越して、夏のような陽気になったり
風が強く乾燥した日や、強雨が伴う嵐がやってきたり。

桜の開花予想が困難なのは当然ですよね。
それがまた楽しいのかもしれませんね。

そんなわけで、
春の高山祭りもまた
毎年天候に悩まされるわけです。

町内の方々は皆
祭りに向けて必死に準備をしているのに
屋台が外に出られないと聞くと
悲しくて寂しくて仕方がありません。

でも、それもまた、
このお祭りの良さなのでしょうね。

実際に今年もキャンセルになった行事がいくつかありました。
それがゆえに、二日目（今日）の午後に観られた
青空と桜と屋台のコラボレーションは見事なものでした。
貴重な貴重なシーンを堪能させていただきました～。

先生方と寿司パーティ a sushi party with English teachers

Last Saturday,
we had a lunch cooking party with the English Teachers
who live in Takayama.

They come from different countries and it was such a great
opportunity for my kids as well as myself to
speak about Japan, Japanese food, food from other countries,
about schools, education and so on.

We took a quick walk to a miso shop
and did a little chat about how miso is made.

It is always wonderful to answer all the questions they have
about our traditional seasonings.

Temaki Sushi is always a good idea
since participants can choose what to put inside their own sushi!!

Forgive the strange angles of all the photos.
The photographer of the day was who does not appear in the photos,
yes, my son!!!
He was quite shy at the beginning,
but all the teachers were so sweet to him,
he keeps on talking about how he had enjoyed
the cooking with them.  He actually presented how to prepare
tamagoyaki (egg roll) in front of them!!  Yay, I'm so proud of him!!

I think such an event can only happen in Takayama
where all the teachers are quite closely related to each other
and with us, too.

We're going to learn how to cook their meal the next time!!
Can't wait!!

oh, by the way, the last photo is
"kanji" that my son wrote.
We had a fun discussion about how fish is expressed in different kanji.

先日、高山在住のＡＬＴの先生（外国語指導助手）と
ランチクッキング会を行いました。

みなさんそれぞれ違う国からの方で、
子供たちにとっても、私自身にとっても
何にも変えがたい貴重な体験でした。

まずは、近所の大好きな味噌屋さんへ出かけ
味噌の原料や作り方の説明を行いました。

たくさん質問のあるみなさんとのやり取りは
いつもこちら側にとっても大きな学びになっています。

そして、戻って
手巻き寿司の準備！
手巻き寿司は、文化、宗教、食習慣の違う参加者さんも
自分で好きなものを選んで食べられるので
大好評！

ちょっと変な角度？？？
フォトグラファーは息子だったのでした 笑。
最初、恥ずかしがっていた息子でしたが、
卵焼き作りを披露できて
みんなに褒めてもらい、ご機嫌＾＾
最終的には、先生方と仲良しになれました。

こんなイベントも高山ならではですよね。
小さなコミュニティなので
人と人との距離が近いのです。

次回は先生方からお料理を
教えていただけるそうです♪

そうそう、
最後の写真は息子が書いた魚へんの漢字たち
先生方も色々ご存知で
感じの由来について当てっこしたり
考えたり、こちらも勉強になりました～。

八幡祭 2017 Takayama Autumn Festival 2017

Luckily, we were able to enjoy this year's autumn festival as well.

Festival Costumes
Festival Food

It is our third year and our fourth year is about to start,
and little by little,
we are getting accustomed to all these things.

Kids, unfortunately, are more interested in what
to buy or what to eat at the festival, rather than
learning about its rich culture.
We have to go back and forth between the food stalls
and the festival floats to satisfy both of our needs.

But still, we all enjoy listening to the festival music,
watching lion dances and the observing beautiful floats
discussing the details and how elaborate they are!!

It is always sad when the Autumn Festival is over
but for kids, it seems that they can't wait for the snow to come.
We, adults, have a lot to learn from them.


2017の秋祭り（八幡祭）も楽しんできましたよ。

祭のご馳走

少しずつ少しずつこれらに関する知識も増えてきたように思います。

子供たちはというと、祭の文化についてよりも
食べ物～、買い物～が一番！
全員の欲望を満たすために
食べ物屋台をうろうろ　⇒　祭屋台をうろうろ
これの繰り返しです。

でも、お囃子の音に耳を傾けたり
美しい屋台のディテールについて話し合ったり
獅子舞のカッコよさに惚れたり
そんな時間を共有できるのはありがたいことですね。

秋祭りが終わると、一気に寒さがやってくる気がして
寂しくなる大人たちなわけですが、
呑気に大雪を楽しみにしているキッズ。

大人も負けないぞ！

大祭 Grand Festival

Last week,
at Minashi Shrine in Hida-ichinomiya,
located 10km south from our place,
"Oomatsuri (Grand Festival)" was held.

As the name "Oomatsuri" （大祭）expresses,
it was literally a grand big festival
that was held for the first time after 57 years!!

I don't do well in explaining the festival nor the shrine.
Click on the below link if you're interested in the details
of the shrine.
Minashi Shrine

Again, it was a grand festival that was last held 57 years ago.
All the deities from Hida-region are said to gather during this festival
and we are able to watch the distinct parade of each shrine
that proceed toward the Minashi Shrine.

At some spots during the parade, they will perform lion dances in different
costumes and with unique moves.

We were able to visit the festival on a beautiful day
and my kids and I enjoyed not only the festival but the
marvelous scenery under the peaceful spring sunshine.

It was so fun imagining what it was like 57 years ago.
We also talked a lot about what we will be doing 57 years later.
I, myself, will not be here for sure
but that is life and my kids will have to survive that
and talking about whether I will be floating above them
or traveling here and there freely, or
eating as much as I want (since I'm a ghost, I won't have
to worry about calories, ha-ha)
while watching the big, noisy, and amazing parade proceeding
in front of us was so much fun, seriously.
Perhaps, this is what religion is all about.
Think, talk, discuss, and get rid of all the scary thoughts about
dying, the big topic, that we usually want to run away from.

Of course, there's no way we can laugh about it
when we have to face it,
but perhaps it is good to talk about it
at least during happy moments.

Anyways, watching this festival was
certainly a rare and precious experience,
feeling the "past" happening right in front of us.
Thank you to our flow of life who or what has brought us here!!

around the shrine.

先週、四日間に渡り、
飛騨一ノ宮（我が家より10キロほど南へ下ったところにある町です）の
水無神社にて、「式年大祭」が開催されました。

文字通り、大きな祭で、
なんと57年ぶりの開催、
飛騨中の神社より神々が集うとされる
大変珍しいお祭りです。

うまく説明する自信がないので

飛騨のあちこちより、
それぞれの御巡幸が列をなして水無神社へ向かう様子
時には、個性的な獅子が舞う様子を見学させていただきながら
子供たちと、57年前について、
57年後はどうなるのか、などについてたくさん話をしました。

57年後かぁ、
もちろん自分はこの世にはおりません。
しかし、それを悲しい話としてではなく
きっと私のことだから、
そこら中をぷかぷかと浮かんでいるだろう、
あっちへこっちへ自由に飛び回っているだろう、
始終好きなものを食らっているのだろう
（もうカロリーは気にしなくていいもんね）
と大いに盛り上がりました　笑。

もちろん、その日がやって来た時に
すんなり受け入れられるはずがないことは
理解しておりますが、少なくても
ハッピーな瞬間に、こんな会話をするのは
悪くないことだと思っています。

いずれにしても
本当に貴重な体験ができたこと、
このタイミングでここにいられたことに感謝します。

2016年にさようなら good bye 2016

We only have one day left till 2017.

We say "time flies."
I do say it, too.
BUT it is always my wish and my hope
NOT to let time fly away.

How was the year 2016 for everybody?
I truly hope it was a better one than the year before.
Of course there are hard moments, hard days
and tough year or years,
but it is wonderful that time is divided into centuries,
years, month, day, hour, minute and second
that we can set and reset goals!!

We had a family year-end party few days ago
We all talked about what we did great this year
and what our goals are for the coming new year!!

A tough one, a hard one, or a happy one, we aren't sure
but come 2017, we are ready!!!

By the way, we love walking along the morning market
at this time of the year.
They have all the beautiful new years' decorations.

Cheers to a New Year!!

2017年まで残すところ後一日です。

時は「あっと言う間に過ぎる」、と表現します。
私もよく使うフレーズです。
しかし、あっと言う間であってほしくない
常にそれを意識しています。

2016年は皆さまにとって
どのような一年でしたでしょうか。
大変な時間、キツイ瞬間、辛い時も
たくさんあって当たり前です。
「時」が秒、分、時間、日、週、年に
区切られていることによって
目標を立てたり、ゴールを作って目指したり
それらに向かってがんばれるのでしょうね。

数日前に
家族の「望年会」を開催しました。

子供たちに「忘年会」をしよう！と
提案したところ、忘年会って何？
「ぼう」は希望の望？と聞いてきた娘。
そりゃそうだ。
子供たちには忘れる会なんていう発想はないのです。

いやなことっていい事よりも記憶に残るもの。
忘れずに自分の一部として
来年の肥やしにしたいものです！

望年会では、今年がんばったこと
来年の目標を発表し合いました。

来年はどんな一年が待っているのでしょうか。
ハードでもなんでも、準備はできているぞ～！！

ところで、
この時期の朝市は
しめ縄飾りが売られていて
散歩するだけでも、楽しいんですよ。
