マイナス８℃の通学 walking to school on a freezing morning

One morning about a week ago, it was literally "freezing."
The temperature marked - 9 Celsius.

I know there are colder places in the world,
BUT!!! we are still a new comer to such freezing world, remember!!

When it goes below - 5,
we cannot walk inside the house without wearing more than
two layers of socks on each foot.

Remember again, in Japan, we normally don't have central heating system,
so the temperature inside the house gets as low as 0 degrees sometimes.

I usually wear double socks plus slippers : )

Going back to the track,
about a week ago,
I was in charge to walk with the kids to school.

There is an electrical sign in front of a bridge where
present temperature is indicated.
It proudly showed that the temperature that morning was "- 8 degrees Celsius," coooold!!

In Japan, parents do not have to take their children to school.
Children walk to school on their own with the neighbors.

Therefore, we just say good-bye from inside the house,
whether its a a boiling day,　a windy day,
a pouring day, a freezing day, or a snowy day.
Children are so used to walking how bad the weather condition is.

The only person complaining how cold it was,
were myself, nobody else.
Children just laughed, talked, ran around, regardless to how freezing it was!!

It was such a great experience and a reminder to
see how tough the children are and
as well as how willing they are to have fun no matter what!!

一週間ほど前のある日、本当に寒い朝がありました。
気温は－９℃だったそうです。

わかってます！
日本には、そして世界にも
これ以上に寒い場所がたくさんあることを！！
でもでも、雪国初心者ですから、私たち！！

－５℃以下になる時には
家の中を歩く場合も二枚重ね以上の靴下が必要です！！

思い出してください（以前にも書きましたが）
寒い時は家の中が０℃になってしまうんですから！！

冬は、くつした二枚重ね＋スリッパで過ごしています。

話が脱線しました、
その朝は
登校分団に同伴する当番でした。

通学路の途中にある、橋の前の電光掲示板が
自慢げに「－８℃」を表示しているではないですか、寒い～。

日本では、学校への送り迎えを親がしませんので、
うだるような暑さの日も、強風の日も、
大雨の日も、凍える寒さの日も、そして大雪の日でも
家の中から「いってらっしゃーーーい」と送り出すだけです。
子供たちは悪天候なんて慣れっこなんです。

その朝、「寒い、寒い～」と文句を言っていたのは私だけ、
子供たちは元気に笑い、大声で話し、走り回り、－８℃の気温なんて
全く関係ありません。

実際に同伴登校してみて、
子供のタフさ、エネルギーを改めて知ることができました。
どんな環境でも「楽しむ力」を持った子供たちを見習わなくては！！

冬支度リスト a new winter preparation list

About a year ago, there was one freezing morning
with a temperature as low as -10 degrees Celcius.

Since most of the houses in Japan do not have "central heating systems"
the temperature becomes as cold as 0 degrees even inside the house
on such cold mornings.

I had to force myself to get out of the blanket as you can probably imagine.

As soon as I got downstairs, I wanted to warm myself with a cup of tea
and opened the tap to boil some water.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing came out of the tap...
I tried different taps,
nothing.

Then I realized that they froze!!!
What do I do know?

It was quite early in the morning but we managed to contact the owner of the
house and we were told that we were supposed to turn on the switch of
the electric wires that run along the water pipes during winter to prevent
them from freezing.

It took almost two hours for the water pipes to melt,
but thank God, the pipes didn't burst...

ちょうど一年ほど前のある日、
早朝の気温がなんと－10℃！！

日本では、高山とはいえ、セントラルヒーティングシステムを導入している家は
少ないので、その朝の我が家は室内温度が０℃、、、
野宿をしているみたい　涙。

布団から出るのも一苦労。

一階に降り、早く温かい物を飲みたい私は
お湯を沸かすために、水道の蛇口をひねりました、
が、、、、、

！！！！！！！！！！

何も出ません。
他の蛇口も、、、
出ません。

まさか、
そうです。凍結してしまったのです。

早朝でしたが、大家さんとコンタクトをとることができ、知ったこと。
それは、こちらでは凍結防止用に、水道管に電気線が這わせてあるので
冬季はそのスイッチ（ブレーカーにそれようのスイッチがあるのです）を
入れなけらばならなかったのでした。

幸い、２時間ほどで水道管の凍結は直り、
大事には至りませんでした。
破裂しなくて良かったです、、、。
（頭の中で修理代の計算をしていました）

雪吊り winter preparation (trees)

The trees of Jinya are ready for snow.
I love their cone shaped forms
and they look beautiful especially in such day with bright blue sky
standing and pointing straight upwards.

In fact, today is a snowy day.
Too bad, I don't have the time to visit the town area today.
I bet they are looking wonderful covered in white.
A Japanese Christmas Tree!!

先日、陣屋の雪吊りを見てきました。
円錐のフォルムが好きです！！

真っ青な美しい空に
すっと伸びる姿がまた美しい。

今日は実際に雪が降っています。
町並みへ出かけられず残念です。
雪で覆われた姿がまたなんとも美しいのです。
和風クリスマスツリーですね。

冬支度④ 用意するものたち prepareing for winter④ materials and minds

高山に来て
冬を迎えるために
我が家にやってきた
アイテムたち

リストにすると結構な量です。

雪かきシャベル
スタッドレスタイヤ
解氷スプレー
雪落とし（車用）
室内干しポール
スノーブーツ
布団乾燥機
石油ファンヒーター
なおなど

雪国暮らしの方々を改めて尊敬します。

生きるって大変。

防寒し
温かいものを食べ
屋根の下で暖をとる

簡単なことではありません。
一生懸命働かなければいけませんね。

雪かきひとつとっても
一人ではできません。
近所の方と協力し合うことも大切です。

この土地では
怠けたり
人と関わらずに生きることは
難しいようです。

必要な「物」は買えばいい。
もっと必要なもの「雪国で暮らす精神」を
まず身に付けないといけないですね。


If we were to list the things we bought
in preparation for the coming winter,
the list will be quite long.

shovels
winter snow tires
ice melts
in-house laundry poles
snow boots
futon drying machine
heater
etc.

We can't imagine yet what it's like to
survive the winter in the snowy Takayama yet
but we already respect the people here for sure.

Living is not easy in this area.

Having warm clothes to wear,
being able to sip warm soup,
having a cozy shelter and sleeping in a warm bed,

these aren't just given to everyone.
We need to work hard to obtain them.

When it snows heavily, we will need to work together with our
neighbors to shovel the snow away to open a space for the cars to drive.

In Takayama,
not working,
having no relations with the neighbors
are impossible.
If you're looking for an isolation, this is not your place to come.

Materials needed can be purchased,
but there are other things we nee to obtain first
"the change of mind"
(live in harmony with the nature and people around)
in order to survive the harsh winter of Takayama.

冬支度③ 「雪吊り」 preparing for winter③ trees

高山市の天気予報

明日から一週間「曇り時々雪」になっています。

いよいよ予報に「雪マーク」が入ってきました。

今日は朝から一日雨です。

明日以降、空から何か降ってくるとしたら

雨粒ではなく「何かの結晶」になるのでしょうか。

11月半ばから
あちこちで見かける風景
町の人々が木に縄をかけ、とても器用にそしてキレイに
「雪吊り作業」をしていらっしゃいます。

それだけで芸術的にも見える立派な仕上がり具合、
そんな写真たちをお見せしたいのですが、
個人のお宅をブログには載せられませんので、
公園の様子を少々。

とても小さな植木などもしっかり雪吊りしてあり
ついカメラを向けたくなってしまいます。

西洋風に言えばクリスマスツリーのような
木のテッペンから三角錐状にロープを降ろすスタイル、
ただグルグルと周囲に縄をかけるスタイル、
様々なやり方があるんですね。

実際に雪がのったらどんな景色になるのかな。


I was watching the weather forecast of Takayama
and it seems like it's going to start snowing.
Actually, there are snow marks everyday for the whole week
starting tomorrow until the beginning of next week.

The temperature is quite high today and it's raining.
If anything will fall from the sky, they will be flakes not drops
from now on I guess.

One of the many things they do here in Takayama before it starts snowing is "Yukizuri."
They put ropes around the trees and shrubs so that the weight of snow doesn't break the branches.

The roped-tree itself is a wonderful piece of art.
It would be great if I could upload some fine works of the houses around,
but since they are private properties,
I will put some photos taken at the parks.

Even shrubs and small plants are beautifully taken care of
and I really enjoy taking pictures of them.

The trees look somewhat like a Christmas Tree in their forms.
They place a rope(or sticks) on top of the tree,
pull down the other end of the ropes in a "cone form."
On other trees, they just place the ropes around the trees.
I've observed many styles of "Yukizuri."

I'm looking forward to what they're going to look like
when it actually starts snowing.

冬支度② 「室内洗濯干しスペース」 preparing for Winter② "in-house drying place"

普段はとにかく少しでも長く陽の光の下で
洗濯物を乾かしたい私です。

天候が変わりやすい高山でも
晴れ間があれば１０分でも
洗濯物を外へ出し、雨雲が迫ってきたら室内へ入れる
を繰り返しています。

ただ、雪が積もってしまったら
何ともなりません。

室内干しのスペースを作ってみました。

もちろん雨の日にも使用しますが、
１２月後半からは、
常に洗濯物がぶら下がっている状態になりそうです。

高山市内には、至るところに
コインランドリーがあります。

決して一人暮らしが多いわけではありません。
冬、室内で乾かないものは
コインランドリーの乾燥機にお世話になるわけです。

なるほどなるほど。


I'm a type who wants to let the sunshine dry the
laundries instead of using the drier.

Even here in Takayama where the sun doesn't stay out for long,
I put the laundries outside
and run out to take them inside whenever I find rain clouds.

Once it starts snowing,
I guess this won't work.

I made a laundry drying place inside the house.

I can use the place on a rainy day as well.
During the snowy winter days, laundries will be hanging there all day long.

We need to go to the dry cleaners or the laundromat
when in need to dry thick and huge things.

That's why I see laundromats everywhere in Takayama city!!

冬支度① 「車」 preparing for winter① "automobile"

高山では、
「車」と仲良くしなければ
暮らしが成り立ちません。
一世帯で数台車を所有するのは
当たり前です。

長く厳しい冬がやってくる前に
車を整備すること
そして、時期を見計らって
タイヤをスタッドレスに
履き替える必要があります。

それだけでは、ありません。
車の雪を落とす道具、
雪を瞬時に溶かすスプレーなども売られており、
急な場合などに備えて
それらも購入した方が良さそうです。

ここのところ、
主人が会社の仲間から
「高山の冬の運転あるある話」を
たくさん聞いてくるのです。

それを伝え聞くだけで
ぞっっっとしてしまいます。

例えば坂道でうっかりブレーキを踏んで
停止してしまうと、発進できなくなってしまうため
一度バックしなければならないそうです（涙）

スタッドレスを履いたところで、
滑るものは滑る、
いかに上手に滑るかを学ばなくてはならないようで、
とにかく時速10キロくらいのペースで、
みんなツルツルと滑りながら走行する雪道、
毎日不安だけが募ります。

とりあえず車よーーし、
次の冬支度は…




In Takayama
it's hard to live without an automobile of some sort.
In most households, one grown up own one car.

Before it starts snowing,
there are several things we need to do.
We must have our cars checked as well as
we need to change the tires to studless snow tires.

These are not all.
We need to purchase tools to remove snow off the cars.
There are even sprays to melt snow in an instant,
perhaps we need to get these, too.

My husband is hearing lots of stories and tips
about "how to drive in snowy and icy roads in Takayama."

It scares me by simply listening to these stories.

For example, once you step on a break on a slope
and once the car actually stops,
the car will no longer move forward unless you
drive backwards and restart.

Putting on snow tires are absolutely necessary,
but it doesn't mean the car will not slide in the snow.
I heard that all cars drive at a speed of around 10km/h (6.2mph).
There is no way not to slip; therefore, we must learn how to
slide in a correct way, ha-ha.
I'm getting more anxious everyday.

Anyways, our car is ready
what shall we do next...
