Hi from Takayama

I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.

My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.

Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!

Cheers to new findings!!

Takayama poireau

I got some poireau (leek) from my
favorite organic farm, Nomura Vegetable Farm.

Poireau is something I really enjoyed while my parents lived
in the Netherlands and I was so happy to find out
that I could get them in Takayama!!

Nomura Farm, not only makes every effort in
growing organic vegetables, but
the owner challenges in growing plants that are not
from this region and tries to make it a local taste.
Takayama poireau is one of them!!

Today, I made a soup with it
and I'm sure you can imagine how delicious it was!!
Forgive me for not taking a photo of the poireau itself.

Looking forward to challenge another rare veggies.

朴葉寿司 sushi in magnolia leaf

You can find Magnolia Trees everywhere in Takayama.

Hoba Miso is probably one of the most popular local cuisine here.
Sweet miso is put on top of a dried Magnolia Leaf
and it is placed on a tiny clay cooking stove for grilling.

At this season, the locals enjoy making Hoba Sushi,
sushi wrapped inside fresh Magnolia Leaf.

In the old days,
this itself was a bento box for a farmer.

Farmers prepared sushi rice (vinegared rice)
plus, several ingredients such as marinated fish,
pickles, cooked shiitake mushrooms
Japanese pepper, Japanese ginger
and so on to add flavors to the sushi
and wrapped it with a fresh Magnolia leaf
to bring with them for lunch!!
Everything was pickled, marinated with vinegar (including the sushi rice)
and placed in the leaf to prevent from bacteria.

How smart
and how ecological!!

ラベンダーシーズン到来♪ it's the lavendar season♪

It's the lavendar season again!!
The ODA farm has opened on June 10th
and we've already went to pick the lavendars twice this year!!

The price is only 100 yen for 70 g of lavendar!!

The nice aroma lasts for more than a year!!

Lavendar picking → a delicious curry lunch nearby is
a perfect dating course that I often enjoy with my friend!!

Sad sad, the best season for edamame is almost ending.

I would very much like to introduce the best edamame I've had!!

Again, these can be bought at the morning market stall of
Nomura Plantation Farm at the Miyagawa Morning Market.

I have to stay, they are a bit expensive
BUT they're worth the price!!

I love to cook edamame with garlic, soy sauce and olive oil
but these from the Nomura Farm,
simply boiling them with salt is the best and the only way
to enjoy the sweetness and the flavor of edamame themselves!!

Edamame and beer
what a perfect match!!

Youtube

About a week ago, we went blueberry picking
at a farm in Kiyomi, a twenty-minute-drive from our place.
(The place is close to the lavendar farm)

The farm had a little Barbecue space,
so we brought our meat and vegetables to
enjoy barbecue and blueberry picking at once!!
What a wonderful plan!!

A friendly owner of the farm told us that
July is the best season for picking blueberries,
so the best season has passed already.
BUT, we could pick black berries as well,
and so we had enough deserts to enjoy
in between and after the barbecue.

It was quite hot to stay out in the sun,
but once we run into the shade,
we could feel the cool breeze
and could just stay there forever.

There were no time limits to pick the berries
so we spent the whole afternoon
eating,
chatting,
eating again,
walk around the garden,
watch insects,
catch insects,
eat again and again...
Heaven!!

Next time, we are going there during July for sure!!

I visit the Miyagawa Morning Market
at least once a week.

You will know exactly what the season is
by looking at what are being sold at the market.

Summer is almost here!!

Love the cute zucchini collection
of Nomura Plantation Farm, the stall I always stop by!!

I made pickles with these zucchinis,
they were just so fresh and delicious.

Have you ever heard of a Malva verticillata?
It probably has different names but
I could only find its botanical name.

In Japanese this vegetable is called okanori
which means nori (seaweed) on land.

It smells like nori when heated,
how awsome!!

Also, they had lemon basils which smell like lemon
and cinnamon basils which smell like cinnamon!!

You just have to pour hot water to the basils
and it becomes a fresh herb tea with a
relaxing aroma.

Everytime I visit the market,
I find things that I have never seen before!!

I don't think there are a lot of strawberry farms in Hida-Takayama
but I'm seeing a lot of "grown in Hida" signs
on strawberry packages recently.

Today, I found a cute tiny size strawberries
so I decided to make a jam!!

As I started to heat the strawberries,
the house was wrapped in a veil of
sweet strawberry scent.
What a happy moment.

How should we enjoy the jam?

French toast with strawberries,
yogurt with strawberries,
vanilla ice cream, all-bran cereals, and strawberries
and more...

Perhaps, two packs of strawberries weren't enough, ha-ha.

If you're visiting the Miyagawa Morning Market
after May till summer,
don't forget to try the
"organic herb tea" of Nomura Farm.

The cup is filled with fresh herbs
and once you pour hot water into the cup
you will be surrounded by the soothing scents of
the variety fresh herbs.

Kuwa-san of Nomura Farm told me
that the herb changes depending on what they have.
Different aromas and tastes every time you try it, wonderful!!

Today I'm having a difficult time
picking English words to explain
what I want to express.

It would be wonderful if anyone could
add to what I'm trying to say in this post.
(if you get what I mean)

I have told you in my previous posts how close
we are to the agricultural producers, manufacturers,
shop owners that we have plenty of opportunities to
talk with them and sometimes even build
personal relationships with them
here in Takayama.

These chances, "en," that we're having to meet interesting people,
gives us further opportunities to meet other people.
Many times we're introduced to others
and other times, we meet them in completely different situations;
however, the funny thing is that in many cases,
people I meet in "place A"
is already a friend of whom I met in "place B."

The seemingly fateful encounter with a wonderful person A "縁 en"
is already connected to another person B I've met in a different place (another "縁 en")
and these relationships are forming a circle "円 en."

Oh no, am I sounding religious or
is it becoming too philosophical?

Anyways, what I'm trying to express is that
there are loads of wonderful people
producing marvelous products with
their utmost effort to make the customers happy.
And once we get to know one of them well,
they introduce us to others and then to others.
We do the same in return and
we realize that we are all connected in a one big circle supporting each other.

Nomura Plantation Farm

At the "Takayama Morning Market,"
we met a friendly woman selling
vegetables, pickles, mochi (rice cakes) and
more products.

They let us taste some mochi
and baked Chinese cabbage with their homemade garlic and chili dips.

These dips are made of chili, garlic and malted rice
and it matches perfectly with the vegetables.
Also, their red turnip pickles were just delicious!!

Later, I found that these products were all handmade in
"Nomura Plantation Farm"
located in the north region of Takayama.

They told us that all their products are non-additive.
They also have tips to make the most marvelous pickles
such as keeping the turnips under the snow,
mixing red and white turnips (while most others use red only)
to add crunchiness. (←hope you understand what I mean)

It's wonderful that we get the chance
to meet and talk to the people who's actually
making the products we purchase.
Nowadays, this does not happen very often,
but here in Takayama, it does.
