It's still quite cold in Takayama.
まだまだ寒い飛騨高山。

We've started feeling some spring here
but then suddenly, it snowed a whole bunch.
春めいてきたと思ったら
突然の大雪。

Perhaps, the snow was a present for us.
A farewell present.
私たちへのプレゼントかなぁ。

You don't know how much we enjoyed
the beautiful white scenery during the freezing days.
凍るような朝も、降り止まない雪も、
全部大好きでした。



Now, the room is all empty.
空っぽになってしまった、部屋。

We only have 10 days left.
No, let's take it this way.
We STILL have 10 days, yay!!
後１０日しかありません。
いえ、まだ１０日あります。
１０日も楽しむ日を残してもらえました。

We are going to make sure
we enjoy every minute we have left!!
大好きな高山のみなさんと
１分１秒を大切に過ごしたいと思います。

始まりました、ほうば寿司シーズン♪ it's in season now!!

The season for "Sushi in Magnolia Leaf" has started!!
We can get fresh leaves of Magnolia Leaves at local markets now.

We made some at home last night.
Since they were made with leftovers from the cooking studio, where I work,
I didn't have to prepare anything.

I'm going to give it a try from scratch the next time!!

具をのせただけ、、、。

今年は、具の準備からチャレンジしてみよう！

春の高山祭 2018 Takayama Spring Festival

The weather of spring in Japan is the most unstable.
One day, it becomes very cold like winter
and the day after it becomes warm, or even hot, and bright like summer.
Many days are windy and even stormy.

That is also why it is fun to predict when the
cherries will come to a full bloom.

Everyone in the neighbors will start talking
"hi, it's a warm day today."
"good morning, it's so cold today."
"Hello, I heard the cherries have just started to bloom."

Our chat will always start out with how the weather is.

The Spring Festival; therefore, is very likely to rain.
Considering all the preparations that the locals are doing,
it seems very sad, but that is probably why
the festival is so precious and worthy.

This year, too
the night festival was canceled and several events were
canceled as well due to rain.
But, look at the photos that I have taken!!
We had beautiful sunshine at the end and we were
all able to enjoy the collaboration of festival floats and the cherries!!

日本の春は天気が安定しません。
真冬の寒さが訪れた翌日には
春を通り越して、夏のような陽気になったり
風が強く乾燥した日や、強雨が伴う嵐がやってきたり。

桜の開花予想が困難なのは当然ですよね。
それがまた楽しいのかもしれませんね。

そんなわけで、
春の高山祭りもまた
毎年天候に悩まされるわけです。

町内の方々は皆
祭りに向けて必死に準備をしているのに
屋台が外に出られないと聞くと
悲しくて寂しくて仕方がありません。

でも、それもまた、
このお祭りの良さなのでしょうね。

実際に今年もキャンセルになった行事がいくつかありました。
それがゆえに、二日目（今日）の午後に観られた
青空と桜と屋台のコラボレーションは見事なものでした。
貴重な貴重なシーンを堪能させていただきました～。

桜ピクニック went on a sakura picnic

I guess the term "sakura" is too popular now.
I probably don't need to translate it.
Perhaps the term "hanami," too.

We, Japanese, looooove to go out on a picnic under
cherry blossoms to enjoy the beautiful blooms as well as
to inhale all the warmth from the spring sunshine!!

Spring, in Japan, the weather is very unstable
and we would have all four seasons in a week.

Yesterday, we had such a beautiful, bright day
but today, it was wet and cold.
On Monday, we had a snowy morning,
but tomorrow again, it is going to be a warm and shiny day.

Since it's usually like this during spring,,
it is always very difficult to find the perfect day
to go out on a sakura picnic, hanami.

Buuuuut,
look how perfect yesterday was for hanami.
I was even able to enjoy the night hanami, too.

The only sad part was that my hanami was without my kids.

If we are lucky enough,
we will be able to enjoy both the saｍkura and the festival together
this weekend!!!

あえて、「cherry blossom」なんて訳さなくてもいいくらい
海外の方も桜を楽しみに来日されます。
そして「花見」も同じです。

春の暖かい空気をたくさん吸い込んで
満開の桜の下での花見、
なんて贅沢なのでしょう。

この時期は、
天候が安定せず、満足のいく花見ができずに終わってしまうことも
よくありますよね。

初夏を思わせるような暑い日があったかと思えば、
雪の朝があったりと
今年も例外ではありません。

でもでも、
完璧なタイミングで、桜ピクニックを満喫することができました！
実は夜桜まで堪能できたのです。

うまくいけば、今週末、
山王祭（春の高山祭）と桜のコラボレーションが
見られます。天気よ、なんとかもってくださいな～。

急な追い上げ it's coming!!

I know the peaks have passed for the
cherry blossoms everywhere.

Since we had a freezing winter this year,
we were expecting the blooms to come late,
but in fact, it seems it's going to come
much, much earlier.

You can tell I was in a rush.

Can you see that the buds are ready to pop open!!
Can't wait!!

By the way,
the updating is being super slow.
When it's slow, it's not because I'm working
but it's mostly because I'm spending my time
with my girl and my boy, forgive me, please!!

各所で、桜がピークを越えていると聞いています。

あんなに寒い冬でしたので、
さぞかし桜の開花が遅れるだろうと
予想していましたが、
ラストスパートがすごかった。

今日のお昼ごろ撮影した写真です。
ピントが桜にあっていません、、、
とっても急いでいたもので。

でも、わかりますよね！！
そうなんです。
いつ開花してもおかしくないのです。

梅の写真をアップしたいと思っていたのに
できておらず、すみません。
アップが遅い時は、だいたい仕事が忙しいわけではなく
キッズと遊んでいる場合が多いです 笑 お許しを。

小学校卒業式 graduation ceremony

My daughter has finished her first six years of
compulsory education and it was her graduation ceremony yesterday.

Unlike other regions in Japan, where students wear dresses, kimonos
or suits, the six graders here wear the junior high school uniforms
on their graduation day.

Kids who had been attending school in casual dresses for six years
were all wearing their brand new school uniforms.
That already brought us to tears recalling the days
when they had just entered the elementary school at the age of six.

I was always wondering whether it is necessary to make a big fuss,
having graduation and entrance ceremonies inbetween
cumpulsory education.

However, I guess it works as a milestone, having the chances
to reset and set new goals.

We truly hope she enjoys the next three years in her new school!!

昨日は、娘の小学校卒業式でした。

この地域では、袴でもなく、スーツでもなく、
中学校で着る制服を着て卒業式に参加します。

体育館の扉が開くと
いつもはカジュアルな普段着で学校生活を送っていた子供たちが
それぞれ学ランやセーラー服で入場します。
その姿を観ただけで、すでに涙がとまりません。

義務教育の合い間に、卒業式や入学式は
果たして必要なのかな、と疑問に思ったこともありますが、
「区切り」「節目」というのは、新たな目標を立てるためにも
やはり大切なのでしょうね。

中学校三年間も、楽しく健康に過ごせますように！！

全国の桜の便りがちらほらと聞こえる中

Again, we are way behind.

今年もまた取り残されておりますが

We're being patient.

お利口に待つことにします。

And... the day after tomorrow
is my daughter's grauation ceremony.
Yes the day has come.

そして明後日は娘の卒業式（小学校の）。
最後のランドセル姿を写真に収めました。
泣けるなぁ。

今年はいつかな when will it be this year?

Every year around this time,
we start predicting when cherries will start to bloom.

This year, of course, since we had such cold winter,
the peak here would probably be at the end of April in Takayama
which means we still have a month and a half.

Buds are still sooooo tight here
and we have no signs of flower blooms yet.

Yesterday, we did a quick one-day trip to Aichi
and we were so surprised to find
colorful flowers as well as Sakura (cherry trees)
that looked like they were ready to bloom any moment.

Early or late, it doesn't really matter
but we're all waiting for the colorful blooms!!

毎年、この時期になると
桜の開花予報を楽しみます。

極寒だった今年の開花は
恐らく遅めなのでしょうね。

用事があり、
昨日、急きょ愛知まで足を延ばしました。
すでにカラフルな花が咲き、桜までもが、
いつ開花してもおかしくない様子で驚きました。

高山のつぼみは、まだまだ固く
辺りを見渡しても「色」がありません。

早くても遅くても、まぁいいや、
爛漫な春を楽しみにしているからね～～♪

これ、母が家でもチャレンジしている木のエスパリエ仕立てです。

しかもこれは桜！ 素敵♪

やっとーーー finally!!!

We can finally feel the rays of the sun
after the coldest winter we've experienced.

Ending of winter in Takayama means
snow on roofs
snow on grounds
it all starts to melt at once.

We continuously hear the dripping sound
of melting snow from the eaves.
Sometimes, huge blocks of ice fall off.
We have to watch our steps when we walk because
grounds and fields are all wet and muddy.

It still takes a while for the flowers to bloom,
but surely Spring is coming!!

やっとやっとやっと、
太陽の暖かさを感じられるようになってきました。
大げさではなく、私自身の人生で
一番寒く長い冬でした。

高山において
冬が終わるということは
そこら中の雪が解けだす
ということです。

この時期になると
常に、軒から滴り落ちる雪が
音楽を奏でています。
時折、大きな雪や氷の塊が降ってくることも。
そして、4月中頃まで
地面はいつもベタベタなので
油断すると、靴がドロドロになってしまいます。

花々の開花までは、まだ時間がかかりますが、
真っ白だった風景に
少しずつ茶が広がって
冬の出口が見えてきた～～、イエイ♪

today (February 26)

節分道中 setsubun parade

Despite the cooooooold weather,
because we wanted to consume alcohol : )
we walked all the way to the center of the town
to enjoy our dinner out!!

On the way back,
we countered "Setsubun" parade!!

We found out that not only the temples and shrines
but also some of the neighbor communities in Takayama
celebrate "Setsubun" parading around the neighbors
and giving out roasted soybeans!!

Forgive my terrible photos.
I was too excited to encounter the funny parade,
and my daughter was almost kidnapped by the "oni"
so everything is blurry.

こんなにも寒いのに、
ちょっと外で夕食をとりたくて
そして、お酒もいただきたくて
町から徒歩で帰宅する途中に、

「節分道中」に遭遇しました　笑。

寺や神社のみならず
町内会でも節分を祝う習慣があるなんて
驚きました。

ひどい写真ばかりでごめんなさい。
娘が鬼にさらわれそうになっていたので
おかしくて（？）写真がブレブレです　笑。
