熱燗 hot sake

As you can tell from my recent posts,
it's been snowing everyday and it's soooo cold.

I'm a beer lover,
BUT it's too cold for beer these days.

"Hot sake"
Sake is served hot during winter in Japan.
I should switch to hot sake
since there are many sake breweries in this area.

I should visit these breweries and
find the best sake that goes well with the food I'm having
in each season.

Today, we visited "Hida Furukawa" a city located at the north of Takayama.
There is a famous brewery called "Watanabe" and we
bought a sake called "Kan King" there.

Tonight's menu was
striped beak fish boiled in soy sauce
AND hot "Kan King."

Having hot sake in cold winter,
what a happy and relaxing moment.
The colder the better to enjoy hot sake.


毎日毎日寒いです。
最高気温が０℃、
そんな日も増えてきました。

ビールが大好きな私ですが、
さすがに寒くなってきました。

熱燗！！
こんな季節は熱燗がいいですね。
せっかく地元には造り酒屋がたくさんあります。

色々巡って
季節や食事に合ったお酒を
探していきたいものです。

本日は、隣町の「飛騨古川」まで行ってきました。
古川の有名な渡辺酒蔵の
その名も燗Kingを買ってきました。

そして、今夜のメニューは石鯛の煮つけ
そして、燗Kingの熱燗！

この季節の熱燗、
なかなかです。
寒ければ寒いほど、うまいのかもしれません。

大きな音の正体 what's making that big sound?

一昨日、雪空、曇り空の合間に貴重な太陽が
顔を出しました。

太陽＝洗濯　な主婦な私は
すかさず洗濯物を外に干し、満足していました。

一階のリビングでくつろいでいると
いきなり「ダーン」と大きな音が、、、。

誰かが壁にぶつかったようなそんな音でした。

聞きなれない音にドキドキしながら、辺りを見回しても
音の原因は全く見当たらず、
気になりながらも部屋へ戻ると
また同じ音が、、、。

さすがに怖くなってきたのですが、
この時も原因がわからず、、、。

しばらくして買い物へ行くために外に出たら頭上から
ポタッと何か落ちてきました。

水、、、。
あ、雪解け水、、、。
そして、次の瞬間
ドカッ！！　
これだったんです、音の正体。
二階屋根の雪の塊が一階屋根に落ちる音。

そして、、、。
その雪解け水が洗濯物を直撃しているではありませんかーーー。

結局雪国では、雪でも晴れても洗濯物は
外に出せないことがわかりました　涙

室内干しスペースが今日も活躍しています。


The day before yesterday was a nice sunny day.
It was the only day with a bright sunshine since
it had been snowy and cloudy all week.

To me, "sun" equals "drying the laundries outside" so
I put out all the laundries in the laundry space on the second floor balcony.

As I was relaxing in the living room,
a big sound came from nowhere.

It seemed like someone or something had banged into a wall .

It made me nervous for I had never heard such a sound.

I looked around the house in a hope to find out the cause of the sound
but I wasn't successful.
As I returned to the living room, another big sound.

Scary..........................but again, couldn't find where the sound was coming from.

Scary but I had to get some food for the dinner so I went outside.
It was then, few drops of water fell on my face.

Guess what the water drops were?
They were the melting snow from the roof.
The next second, I heard a huge bang!!

This was causing the big sound.
The sun was melting the snow on the roof and it was dropping.
Tiny water drops are all right, but once in a while, a chunk of snow
fell and these were making the huge sound.

AND..............oh no!! the melting snow was dropping on the laundries.

A lesson I learned that day was
"even on sunny days, laundries should stay inside the house during the
winter in Takayama." ha-ha.

おもしろ折込チラシ a funny sales ad(flyer)

随分前ですが、
新聞にこんな折込チラシが入っていました。

こんなことが書かれています。

場所　畑の真ん中

やめる理由
その①　　畑の真ん中でキツネやタヌキもこない！！
その②　　店主が年老いて店番もできなくなってきたため！！

ないものはない！！

だそうです。

こんなユーモアたっぷりのお店が
閉店だなんてもったいない。


I found a funny sales ad inserted in the newspaper
about a month ago.

It says

Closing Sale

location:  in the middle of a vegetable garden

the reasons we're closing
①　since we're located in the middle of a vegetable garden
     (located in the middle of nowhere), not even a fox nor a racoon comes.
②　the owner has become too old to keep the shop

there're nothing we don't have!!


so sad we're loosing a shop with such a great sense of humor.

自宅周辺で今朝撮った写真たちです。

昨日の最高気温は０℃。
今朝の最低気温は－３℃でした。

何の説明もいりませんね　笑

これだけ降れば大きな雪だるまが作れるかな。

昼食の時間だと言うのに
キッズは戻ってきません。


This is what it looks like today in Takayama.

The highest temperature yesterday was 0 degrees Celsius.
The lowest today was -3 degrees.

I guess no explanation is needed.

We can finally make a big snowman.

It's lunch time but it seems my kids aren't coming home...

クルクル変わる家からの景色 the changing view from our home

高山の天気は変わりやすい

一日の中に晴れ、雨、曇りが

エンドレスサイクルでやってきます。

もちろん、

一日晴れ

一日雨　の日もありますが

窓から外を見る度に変わる空

そんな空の観察がマイブームになっています。

よく晴れた日は

東に乗鞍岳がキレイに見えます。

曇りや雨の日は

乗鞍岳が雲の向こうに存在しているなんて嘘のようです。

そして、よくある朝の風景。

朝もやに包まれる山々。

随分気温が下がってきました。

この先の景色もまた楽しみです。

The weather of Takayama is unstable.

The sun is suddenly covered with thick clouds and 

it starts raining.  Such cycle occurs repeatedly in one day.

There are days with stable weather of course 

but actually it's really fun observing the sky,

the sky that keeps on changing its expressions every time I look up.

When the sky is very clear,

I can see Mt. Norikura on the east.

When it's cloudy or rainy,
I can't even imagine there are beautiful mountains spreading ahead.

This is a scenery often seen of a morning mist.

The temperature is becoming lower and lower each day.
What will it look like at the end of December?

冬支度④ 用意するものたち prepareing for winter④ materials and minds

高山に来て
冬を迎えるために
我が家にやってきた
アイテムたち

リストにすると結構な量です。

雪かきシャベル
スタッドレスタイヤ
解氷スプレー
雪落とし（車用）
室内干しポール
スノーブーツ
布団乾燥機
石油ファンヒーター
なおなど

雪国暮らしの方々を改めて尊敬します。

生きるって大変。

防寒し
温かいものを食べ
屋根の下で暖をとる

簡単なことではありません。
一生懸命働かなければいけませんね。

雪かきひとつとっても
一人ではできません。
近所の方と協力し合うことも大切です。

この土地では
怠けたり
人と関わらずに生きることは
難しいようです。

必要な「物」は買えばいい。
もっと必要なもの「雪国で暮らす精神」を
まず身に付けないといけないですね。


If we were to list the things we bought
in preparation for the coming winter,
the list will be quite long.

shovels
winter snow tires
ice melts
in-house laundry poles
snow boots
futon drying machine
heater
etc.

We can't imagine yet what it's like to
survive the winter in the snowy Takayama yet
but we already respect the people here for sure.

Living is not easy in this area.

Having warm clothes to wear,
being able to sip warm soup,
having a cozy shelter and sleeping in a warm bed,

these aren't just given to everyone.
We need to work hard to obtain them.

When it snows heavily, we will need to work together with our
neighbors to shovel the snow away to open a space for the cars to drive.

In Takayama,
not working,
having no relations with the neighbors
are impossible.
If you're looking for an isolation, this is not your place to come.

Materials needed can be purchased,
but there are other things we nee to obtain first
"the change of mind"
(live in harmony with the nature and people around)
in order to survive the harsh winter of Takayama.

冬支度③ 「雪吊り」 preparing for winter③ trees

高山市の天気予報

明日から一週間「曇り時々雪」になっています。

いよいよ予報に「雪マーク」が入ってきました。

今日は朝から一日雨です。

明日以降、空から何か降ってくるとしたら

雨粒ではなく「何かの結晶」になるのでしょうか。

11月半ばから
あちこちで見かける風景
町の人々が木に縄をかけ、とても器用にそしてキレイに
「雪吊り作業」をしていらっしゃいます。

それだけで芸術的にも見える立派な仕上がり具合、
そんな写真たちをお見せしたいのですが、
個人のお宅をブログには載せられませんので、
公園の様子を少々。

とても小さな植木などもしっかり雪吊りしてあり
ついカメラを向けたくなってしまいます。

西洋風に言えばクリスマスツリーのような
木のテッペンから三角錐状にロープを降ろすスタイル、
ただグルグルと周囲に縄をかけるスタイル、
様々なやり方があるんですね。

実際に雪がのったらどんな景色になるのかな。


I was watching the weather forecast of Takayama
and it seems like it's going to start snowing.
Actually, there are snow marks everyday for the whole week
starting tomorrow until the beginning of next week.

The temperature is quite high today and it's raining.
If anything will fall from the sky, they will be flakes not drops
from now on I guess.

One of the many things they do here in Takayama before it starts snowing is "Yukizuri."
They put ropes around the trees and shrubs so that the weight of snow doesn't break the branches.

The roped-tree itself is a wonderful piece of art.
It would be great if I could upload some fine works of the houses around,
but since they are private properties,
I will put some photos taken at the parks.

Even shrubs and small plants are beautifully taken care of
and I really enjoy taking pictures of them.

The trees look somewhat like a Christmas Tree in their forms.
They place a rope(or sticks) on top of the tree,
pull down the other end of the ropes in a "cone form."
On other trees, they just place the ropes around the trees.
I've observed many styles of "Yukizuri."

I'm looking forward to what they're going to look like
when it actually starts snowing.
