雪割草 a mealy primrose

I found a lovely plants stall in the Miyagawa Morning Market.

They had mini-bonsai and cute plants with soothing pale colors.

There I met a plant called Yukiwarisou.

Later, I found that it is a kind of mealy primrose.

Yuki means snow.

Wari or waru  means to break through.

Sou means grass or plants.

Yukiwarisou therefore means 

plants that break through snow.
Despite its delicate appearance,
the plant is quite tough　:)

This mealy primrose is typically found in wet, mountainous areas.

And the flowers bloom during March and April.

The woman at the stall told me

not to give too much water.

A-ha!!  This is definitely my kind of plant!!

I decided to take one home and is now

lightening up our Hina Dolls.

How lovely!!

宮川朝市で鉢植えを扱う素敵なお店を見つけました。
ミニ盆栽や淡いかわいいお花たちがたくさん。

ここで初めて「雪割草」に出会いました。

その名の通り、この時期に
雪を割るようにして咲き出す
見た目ほど繊細ではなく
意外にもたくましい（笑）花だそうです。

この雪割草は湿った山地に多く生息するそうで
3月～4月に花を咲かせます。

うまく育てるコツは
水をあげ過ぎないことだそうです。

まさしく、私にピッタリの花！！
一鉢連れて帰ることにしました。
今は玄関のお雛様を
より華やかに彩ってくれています。
ああ、かわいい♪

今日の高山 2015年3月11日 Takayama today March 11, 2015

Is March spring or winter?

It depends, I guess.

Today, it's winter for sure!!

Takayama is again covered in 

white blankets of snow.

The lowest temperature today was -5 degrees Celsius,

and the highest din't go above zero.

On such a cold day,

I guess we'll sit in the Kotatsu,

have some hot tea and genkotsu ame!!

Genkotsu ame is a popular candy in this area.

They are made of roasted soy powder and starch syrup.

(we're not being lazy : ) this is just a tea break after the

snow shoveling, remember?)

3月は春ですか、それとも冬？

その日によりますね。

今日は間違いなく冬です！！

高山は再び真っ白になってしまいました。

本日の最低気温は－5℃、

最高音は0℃でした。

そんな日は

こたつで温かいお茶と

飛騨のおいしいげんこつ飴をいただくしかありません。

（なまけているわけではありませんよ

雪かき作業の後のブレークタイムです。　笑）

ひな人形 Hina Dolls

I've mentioned in my previous post
Hinamatsuri in Takayama
that Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival) is celebrated on
the 3rd of April in Takayama.

Beautiful Hina Dolls are displayed in shops, hotels,
museums and even in schools throughout the town.

I hope you enjoy the photos of the
various Hina Dolls.
Some are more than a hundred years old!!

こちらでは4月3日にひな祭りの
お祝いをすることをお伝えしました。

3月中、
市内のあちこちに
ひな人形が飾られています。
（学校にも飾られるんです！）

100年以上前の物も
たくさんありました。

「縁」がつながり「円」になる "en" and "en"

Today I'm having a difficult time
picking English words to explain
what I want to express.

It would be wonderful if anyone could
add to what I'm trying to say in this post.
(if you get what I mean)

I have told you in my previous posts how close
we are to the agricultural producers, manufacturers,
shop owners that we have plenty of opportunities to
talk with them and sometimes even build
personal relationships with them
here in Takayama.

These chances, "en," that we're having to meet interesting people,
gives us further opportunities to meet other people.
Many times we're introduced to others
and other times, we meet them in completely different situations;
however, the funny thing is that in many cases,
people I meet in "place A"
is already a friend of whom I met in "place B."

The seemingly fateful encounter with a wonderful person A "縁　en"
is already connected to another person B I've met in a different place (another "縁 en")
and these relationships are forming a circle "円 en."

Oh no, am I sounding religious or
is it becoming too philosophical?

Anyways, what I'm trying to express is that
there are loads of wonderful people
producing marvelous products with
their utmost effort to make the customers happy.
And once we get to know one of them well,
they introduce us to others and then to others.
We do the same in return and
we realize that we are all connected in a one big circle supporting each other.



今回の話、
英語に直すのが大変、、、。
正確には英語の文から先に考えましたが
うまく英語で表すことのできない「縁」という言葉に苦労しました。
今回の投稿に関しては「訳」ではなく
英語、日本語それぞれの文章だと思って頂いた方が
いいかもしれません。


以前少し触れたように
高山で暮らしていると
「生産者」や「店主」「事業主」と
直接話をする機会が多くあります。

直接話ができる分、
客のリアクションは
ダイレクトに返ってきます。
多くの生産者さんが
相当なこだわりを持って
愛着を持って
自信を持って
「良い商品」を作っています。

大好きなカフェやレストランにて
おいしい！と感激し
話を聞くと
すでに私が別の「ご縁」で知り合った
農家さんのものだったりする。
市の物理的なサイズは大きくとも
人口が一部に集中している高山ならではなのでしょうか、
こんな風に
こちらの「縁」とあちらの「縁」がつながり
ひとつの「円」になっているようです。

それぞれが
「作り出すもの」に自信を持ち
「仕入れるもの」
「使うもの」にこだわりを持ち
紹介し、紹介され
ぐるぐると
乱れることのない
強い結び付きで
どんどんとその「縁と円」は広がっているように思います。

是非みなさんも
この大きな円の中の
心地よさを少し体験してみてください。

お酒がずらり a collection of "sake"

In the nearest convenience store,

I found a collection of "sake" in the beverage cooler.

I took the photo with my old cell camera 

so you can hardly see the labels

but all the sake are from the local breweries.

I think the bottles contain only about 150ml to 200,

a tiny bottle for us to enjoy just a sip : )

But still,

I had a fun moment

looking at the variations of sake we have in this town

in a c-store where typically they only have a few kinds

of popular sake.

近所のコンビニでパチリ。

お酒コーナーにずらりと並ぶお酒。

古い携帯カメラで撮ったため、

銘柄があまりはっきり写っていませんが、

全て地元の酒蔵で造られたお酒です。

コップ一杯分の小さなボトルです。

一口のお楽しみ。

それにしても、

普通のコンビニにこんなに豊富な

地元のお酒が、、、。眺めているだけで

楽しくなります。

こちらならではですね。

今日の高山 2015年3月3日 Takayama today March 3, 2015

The lowest temperature this morning
was -3.8 degrees Celsius
and the highest is 4.8.

It snowed last morning but is seems
they don't stay anymore.

No more snow on streets,
which means, my son can play soccer and
ride his bike, yay!!
He told me he doesn't need to wear his coat.

Snow still remains on soil and roofs,
but colors other than white are spreading and increasing
little by little everyday.

We will miss the snow
but can't wait to be surrounded by beautiful greens
and colorful flowers!!

本日の最低気温は－3.8℃、
最高気温は4.8℃です。

昨日は雪が降りましたが、
もうあまり積もることはないようです。

道路の雪がなくなりました。
と言うことは、
サッカーができる！
自転車にも乗れる！！
もうコートもいらないそうです　笑。

土や屋根の上にはまだ雪が残っています。
でも、少しずつ少しずつ、「白」以外の色が
広がってきました。

雪がなくなるのは寂しいけど
美しい緑とカラフルな花々に囲まれた風景も
楽しみです！！

氷柱 icicles

It wasn't my first time to see icicles in Takayama.
I had seen some when I was little and in other places I traveled.

BUT,
I had never seen such huge, long, gigantic, icicles in the past.
(I'm not sure which adjective best describes them
but they're  simply "BIG!!")

We sometimes go on an icicle tour, haha
to observe the various icicles
formed on various places.

高山に来て氷柱を初めて見たわけではありません。
幼い頃、家のまわりにもありましたし、
旅行先などで見つけたこともありました。

しかし、
こんな長くて特大な氷柱は初めて見ました。

様々な場所にできた、様々な氷柱を観察すべく
時々「つららツアー」に出かけます。

そこで撮った写真をご紹介しますね！！
