In Takayama
it's hard to live without an automobile of some sort.
In most households, one grown up own one car.
Before it starts snowing,
there are several things we need to do.
We must have our cars checked as well as
we need to change the tires to studless snow tires.
These are not all.
We need to purchase tools to remove snow off the cars.
There are even sprays to melt snow in an instant,
perhaps we need to get these, too.
My husband is hearing lots of stories and tips
about "how to drive in snowy and icy roads in Takayama."
It scares me by simply listening to these stories.
For example, once you step on a break on a slope
and once the car actually stops,
the car will no longer move forward unless you
drive backwards and restart.
Putting on snow tires are absolutely necessary,
but it doesn't mean the car will not slide in the snow.
I heard that all cars drive at a speed of around 10km/h (6.2mph).
There is no way not to slip; therefore, we must learn how to
slide in a correct way, ha-ha.
I'm getting more anxious everyday.
Anyways, our car is ready
what shall we do next...
notes of "everyday little findings" from Takayama City, Gifu, Japan
Hi from Takayama
I'm Sanae. I have lived in Takayama for 4 and a half years starting Oct. 2014 till March 2019. I enjoyed living in such a beautiful city surrounded by mountains. Here is a blog that shares the happy times I had in Takayama.
My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.
My new place is Anjo, Aichi, but I'm too much in love with Takayama, I will continue adding some more infos about Takayama, plus I will be adding some updates about my new place as well.
Also, my life has been about "moving" everywhere!! Believe it or not, this was my 14th time to move and I thought there are a lot to share about my "moving life." There are some special things that I see and experience by living in different cities not just in Japan but in other countries as well!!
Cheers to new findings!!

雨のお散歩 a walk in the rain
Unless it's pouring,
a rainy day is not that bad to go out.
We grabbed our umbrellas and went for a walk.
We stopped by at a local supermarket called "Sato"
I just love the red turnip logo :) it's cute.
On weekends they sell fresh fish from "The Sea of Japan,"
on Fridays the price of rice becomes 10 percent off,
and sometimes they give out free coupons for soy sprouts.
What a wonderful supermarket.
I can't wait for the next fun event.
Walking a bit further from this "Sato Supermarket"
we found our "destination for the day."
I'll talk about this "destination" the next time, perhaps.
During our one-hour-walk,
it had been raining on and off.
Sometimes, we even saw the sun peaking through the clouds.
In such unstable weather,
we saw a rainbow in the mountains for the second time in Takayama!!
Unstable weather probably means,
rainbows are likely to appear.
Wow, I found another good thing about this place.
My son and I are secretly looking for the "treasure"
hidden at the end of a rainbow.
Let me report to you when we succeed!!

I should have known
Today's Takayama
They said the temperature wil go down to 2 degrees Celsius
and they also said it was going to be rainy all morning.
It was actually raining when I got up,
but very soon it stopped and a nice blue sky came out.
Then of course, I should do another round of washing!
It's going to get colder everyday, and there won't be enough sunshine
for the laundries to dry.
So the washing machine did it's second round of washing.
I went upstairs to put out the laundries and found
a whole bunch of dark clouds.
Then suddenly it started pouring...oh no.
"The weather of Takayama is like that of a mountain.
You think it's sunny but rain clouds come out of nowhere
and it starts raining."
This is what I wrote myself in this Blog.
Of course,
it's Takayama,
I should have known.
The drying space I made for the winter to come
is already being used today!!

It's getting closer to
I was watching the weather forecast of the coming seven days.
The lowest temperature seems ready to go below zero.
Not just for one day, but for the whole week.
The highest will no longer go above ten.
Is it coming?
(the temperature is in Centigrade)
I mean of course there are lots of colder places
and I shouldn't be surprised yet.
However, in the city where I used to live,
this is the temperature of the coldest month.
We're wearing coats
scarves
gloves
and boots
What else should we wear?
It's coming.
We're both anxious and excited to experience
"The Winter of Takayama."

こもとうふ "komo tofu" a local taste of Takayama
Today's post is about Takayama's local taste.
Many of the terms are hard to translate
so I'll be using Japanese words as they are.
When I travel, I love to visit local supermarkets.
I enjoy finding out what people in that area enjoys.
Takayama is just 3-hours-drive from where I used to be
so of course most of the things I see are the same
but still I get so excited when I find things I've never seen before.
The first thing I tried was "komo tofu."
I think "tofu" is famous enough, it's a bean curd.
But "komo tofu" is a bit different from the typical tofu we eat.
I found out that "komo tofu" was originally made to preserve the tofu
for longer days.
You wrap the tofu with straws, put some sugar and soy sauce
and let it simmer for quite a long time until there are bubbles in the tofu.
Smooth tofu are nice, but I also enjoy these long simmered tofu
so this "komo tofu" is definitely going to be on our dinner table
quite often.
This "komo tofu" is harder than "momen tofu" so perhaps I can
slice it and use it in replace of a mozzarella cheese to make a
"Caprese-like Salad."
I want to challenge "komo tou" both
in traditional ways
and in my own ways.

Half a month has passed since we moved to Takayama.
My daughter goes to school five days a week,
and she is already getting used to going to school from here.
She goes to school by walk in a group.
She comes back with her friends who lives nearby.
She puts down her school bag and goes out to play with her friend.
A music plays throughout the town telling it's 5 pm.
She comes running through the rice field from nowhere.
do homework
have dinner
go to sleep
this is her every day life.
I was wondering,
"what is she doing with her friends?"
I wrote in my previous post that there are no parks around.
The answer was
"I am building a hideout with my friends!!"
To be precise, she is "digging" a hideout besides a vegetable garden at her friends house.
They are digging a huge hole.
I mean "huge" for their size.
She told me that two kids can fit in the space and that
it's warm inside.
How are they digging the hideout?
What are they using to dig it?
I'm the excited ones and I have so many questions
but hideout is a hideout, everything is secret of course.
I bet the snacks they have inside the hideout
is the most delicious thing in the world to them.

Dango (sweet Japanese dumblings) of Takayama
"Dango" is a kind of Japanese Sweet.
You may have heard the name "Sweet Japanese Dumblings"
It is usually round shaped and
three, four, or even more of them are served on a skewer.
In Takayama City,
you will encounter a lot of "Dango Stands."
You cannot talk about Takayama without talking about dango, perhaps.
I've visited Takayama as a tourist several times before,
and I had seen lots of dango stands in the old town area.
I thought these were just for the tourists.
To my surprise, in the past few weeks, I found dango stands
in every supermarket I went.
Dango is loved by the local people more than I had imagined.
How often do they eat dango? On what occasions?
Is it just a snack or do they eat them as a part of their meal?
I'm so eager to find it out!!
