森の市 a green market

A market called "mori no ichi" is held only for two days
at the beginning of May every year.

We had wanted to go there since we started living in Takayama,
so I had left the whole two days open to visit this particular market.

It is held on the mountain side where the place used to be a ski run,
and all sorts of hand craft shops gather from all over Japan!!

Seeing the beautiful crafts and buying them of course are fun,
but talking to the people who actually make the products is what I enjoy the most.

Also, there are lots of fun activities that we are able to attend at a fair price.

My kids loved leather crafting and they made 2 of them for themselves
and for a gift!!  (making a tiny key accessory)

I can't believe we have to wait for another whole year for this market!!

毎年、5月の始めに二日間だけ
「森の市」というマーケットが開催されます。。

この１年、首を長くして待っていたマーケットだったので
この日のために、丸々二日間、予定を空けていました　：）

その昔、スキー場として使われていた場所での開催なんです。

ありとあらゆる手作りクラフト作家さんが、日本全国から集結するのです。

こだわりの物たちを見るのも楽しい、買うのも嬉しい、
でも、作家さんたちとのおしゃべりが一番好きです、私。

物を買うだけでなく、
数々の体験コーナーも設けられています。

子供たちがはまったのは、
レザーキーホルダー作り、自分の分や人にあげる分まで
作っていましたよ。

次回まで、また一年待たないといけないなんて、、、。

マムシグサ Jack-in-the-pulpit

On the way back home after the river walk on May 3rd,
we took the mountain route and
enjoyed observing the plants and flowers!!

It's always fun to take photos of the beautiful flowers,
look for the names and learn about it afterwords with kids.

5月3日の川散歩の帰りは山ルートで
（かなり大回りなルートなんですが）
植物の観察をエンジョイしました。

写真を撮り、見つけた植物について
帰宅してから子供たちと調べるのも
楽しみのひとつです。

川散歩 river stroll

We went for a stroll by the river today.

Walking time is my communication time with the kids.
"Like mother, like daughter/son"
We are both so talkative!!
Our conversations go on and on about
our everyday things, about what we see,
about school life, about friends,
about what they want to try baking. and so forth.

We also like to observe the things we see,
things like flowers, plants, trees, insects, birds, sky and clouds!!

And of course, whenever we find food,
we never forget to try them!!
Today, we tried crepes!
Oh no, I forgot to take photos.
I had a salad crepe and a glass of red wine,
my daughter chose a kiwi and cream,
my son, a crunchy caramel with cream.

We took the mountain route on the way home
and the total steps were 16,000 today.

I took many photos,
so I will put the latter half on my next post!!

ゴールデンウィーク真っ只中、
本日は川散歩に出かけました。

散歩時間が子供たちとのコミュニケーションタイムです。
娘も息子も私に似ておしゃべりです　笑。
毎日のこと、目に飛び込んできた何かについて、
学校のこと、友達のこと、
次に作ってみたいお菓子について、などなど。

花や草木、昆虫や鳥、空と雲の観察も
欠かしません。

そしてもちろん、
おいしそうなものを見つけたら
すぐにチャレンジします♪
本日は初めてクレープ屋さんに立ち寄ってみました。
あ、写真を撮るのを忘れました、、、。
私は、サラダクレープと赤ワイン、
娘はキウイ
息子はキャラメルクランチとクリームのクレープでした。

帰り道は小高い山コースを選び
全部で16000歩！！

写真をたくさん撮ったので、
後半の写真は次回のブログにて紹介します。

特例ガイド業務していました tour guiding!!

I had been doing my tour guiding job for several days.
It's in the middle of the "Golden Week," remember?

The old town area and the morning market are packed with tourists.

I went to the station several times to pick up my client
and I start thinking, is this Japan?

Cherry blossoms have ended and fresh green season has come!!

The mornings are still quite cold but as soon as the sun goes up high,
it is probably the best season to take a stroll around.
Beside the fact that it is in the middle of the Golden Week,
no wonder there are so many tourists in the city.

The best thing about doing this job is that I get to share thoughts
with so many different people from around the world.
Chat about each other's everyday life,
discuss the economic problems of the countries,
complain about the politics and so forth.

Being asked about our way of living,
our culture, our religion, our houses,
it makes me stop, think and rethink about
what we eat and do without even noticing.

I was complaining about how
rules and regulations are too strict at schools and societies in Japan.
I was complaining that we should live a freer life
not minding too much about the "others."

But my clients tell me everyday,
how impressed they are with the politeness and the patience that we, Japanese, have,
and how well treated they are everywhere they go,
and how clean the town, the public facilities are
and so forth.

Strengths and weaknesses,
when one changes,
the other simply turns around, I guess.

Which is better, I don't know.
But the strength of Japan, I believe is quite unique,
we should probably keep them and reinforce them even.

I just love discussing endlessly about things that cannot be solved.

ここ数日間は、特例ガイド業務をしておりました。
ゴールデンウィークですから！！

古い町並みも朝市も人で溢れかえっています。

駅にお客様を迎えに行く度に、
ここは日本？と疑問に思ってしまうほどの外国人観光客の数なのです。

桜は終わり、新緑シーズンに突入です。

朝はまだまだ寒い高山ですが、
陽が高くなる頃には散歩に最適な気温、
一番いい季節なのかもしれません。
ここまで大勢の観光客が訪れるのは
ゴールデンウィークが理由だけではないということですね。

以前もお伝えしたように
この仕事で一番素敵なこと、
それは世界からいらっしゃる様々な国の方々と
普段の生活について、
時には経済の問題について
政治に関する不平不満について
ニュースには載らないことについて意見交換できることです。

普段、気にも留めないようなことに関して
聞かれ、驚かれ、
こちらも日々の何気ないことについて
疑問を投げかけあれこれ考えるようになるわけです。

日本での生活って
規律や規則がたくさんあり過ぎて
人に迷惑をかけない、我慢する、
周囲の目を気にする
そんなの窮屈
もっと「個」を大切にするべきでは、
他人の目を気にせず自由に生きたい
そんな風によく考えます。

でも、
毎日のようにお客様から言われるのです。
秩序があり
誰と話しても礼儀正しくて
我慢強くて心が温かい、
こんな国は他にない、
僕たちは自分の国が恥ずかしくなる時があるよ。
街もとても美しい。
そんなに褒めてもらったら照れちゃうわ、
というくら褒めてくださいます。

規律や規則を緩めたなら、
回りの目を気にしなくなったのなら、
長所と短所は紙一重、、、ですね。

どちらがいいのかな、
わかりません。
でも、日本のいいところは
やっぱりどこもマネのできない特別なもの。
より強化させなくてはいけないくらいかもしれません。

答えの出ない、こんなことについて
あれこれおしゃべりすることが大好きです。

Nob 寿司ダイニング Sushi Dining "Nob"

More than 40 thousand foreigners visited Takayama last year!!

Because, Takayama has become a popular place for 

foreigners to visit,

there are lots of facilities and restaurants that attracts 

foreigners especially.

Sushi Dining "Nob" is one of those places I think.

Takayama is an inland city,

so you usually don't think of "sushi."

But, Nob serves a surprisingly good sushi in "maki (roll)" style!!

What Nob, the owner and sushi chef, creates are 

pieces of art on a dish!!

Sushi rolls are not Takayama's local taste but 

Nob is ones of the top places I want to take my clients to 

when I do a tour guide!!

昨年、高山を訪れた外国人観光客は約40万人だったそうです。

高山には、外国人観光客に人気の街ならではの

スポットやレストランがたくさんあります。

寿司ダイニング Nob　はその内の一つです。

内陸に位置する高山は寿司とは無縁なイメージがあります。

でも、Nobでは驚くほどおいしい寿司（ロール寿司）が食べられるのです！！

オーナーのノブさんが造りだす

美しい、そして味がいい

まさに「美味しい」のです。

巻寿司は高山の郷土料理ではありません。

でも、特例ガイドの仕事の時に

お客様をお連れしたいお店リストの上位にあるお店です。

祭提灯の柄 the marks of paper lanterns

Beautiful paper lanterns are put out in front of each houses
during the festival days.

Each has different marks and some even has different shapes.

In the area where spring and autumn festivals are held,
each houses belong to a "yatai kumi" (festival float section)
and these sections have their own festival float as well as their own marks.

These marks are also printed at the back of their festival costumes!!

An old man explained that back in the Edo era when the festival has started,
the members of each festival float section designed their
own marks which they think appeared coolest of all!!

It may be interesting to do some research on what
each marks mean!!

祭の両日、各家々の前に
提灯が掲げられます。

よく見ると、様々な柄や形があるではないですか！！

春と秋のお祭りが開催される中心地は、
それぞれが「屋台組」に属しています。
この屋台組が、屋台と各自のシンボルマーク（印）を持っているそうで、
提灯や祭の衣装にこの印が載っているのです。

江戸時代から受け継がれる印だそうで、
その頃に各組で「一番かっこいい印」を考えだし、
現在に受け継がれているそうです。

この印の意味を調べてみるとおもしろいかもしれないですね！！

緑の野菜のシーズン♪ green vegetable season♪

Yay,
the season has come!!

The season of green vegetables we had been waiting for!!

Also all kinds of "orina" can be seen at the market!!

All of a sudden, the dinner table brightens with
the beautiful colors of the fresh green vegetables,
and we enjoy the bitterness of these spring greens!!

Boil them and sprinkle some soy sauce & grinded sesame,
saute them with olive oil and black pepper,
marinate them with rice vinegar,
each and every way we cook them, they are all soooooo delicious!!

ヤッタ、
シーズンがやってきました！！

新鮮な緑の野菜が手に入るシーズンです！！

昨年お話した折り菜が市場に並び始めましたよ。

食卓がキレイな緑で急に明るくなります。
そして、春の苦味を楽しむのです。

醤油とゴマをかけておひたしに、
オリーブオイルと黒コショウをかけて洋風に、
米酢でマリネしてサラダ風に、
どれもこれも絶品なのです！！
