新「高山駅」 renovated Takayama Station

The railway station which were already under renovation
when we moved to Takayama is having a
"renewal ceremony" today. (Oct. 1, 2016)

Despite the city being so proud of the new station
having a design that is suppose to resemble the lattice work window
of the old town, I was so sad that they had made the decision to
tear down what can never be "reproduced."

BUT,  I have to admit that they have done a wonderful interior work.
I respect all the hard works/beautiful works of the construction workers
and carpenters.

I won't show a lot of pictures because I want you to enjoy the new
station yourselves but I hope all you will enjoy the warmth of
the wooden interior when you arrive in Takayama!!

本日、高山駅新駅舎のオープンイベントがありました。（2016年10月1日）

大きな声では言えませんが、
古く美しい旧駅舎を取り壊すという決断に
どうしても賛成できませんでした。
古い町並みの格子をイメージしたと言う
新しいデザインも、
全然違うじゃん、
あまり好きになれないなって
小さな小さな声で呟いています。

ただ、
長期間に渡り、悪天候の日も極寒の日も
労力を費やした職人の皆さんには敬意を表します。
そして、内装はとっても素敵でした。

写真は少しにしておきます。
木のぬくもり溢れる高山駅を確認しに、
遊びにいらしてくださいね。

今年も枝豆♪ edamame♪

Edamame season is still on!!

I was looking at my previous posts and found out that

I had written about edamame at the end of September

last year as well!!

I found another wonderful stall at the morning market 

that sells the most delicious edamame!!

Actually, the woman is a farmer who specializes in making beans!!

She is a shy lady, so I don't have her photos but her name is 

Ishihara-san.

The name is written in Kanji at the back of her stall!!

Again, she is a very shy lady but make sure to look for her stall

when you take a walk there and 

be sure to get your edamame once you find them!!

Don't ever think about coming back, they will get sold out by the time you return.

Look at the beautiful, green edamame!!!!!!!!!!

Don't forget your beer, too♪

まだまだ枝豆シーズン真っ只中です。

ちょうど、去年の今頃

「枝豆」の記事を書いていました。

また新たに枝豆のうまいお店を発見しました。

宮川朝市のこのお店は、何を買っても間違いなくおいしい

「豆農家」さんです。

恥ずかしがりやの、おばちゃんなので

写真がありません、、、

（いつか撮るぞ～～）

お店の後ろに小さく「石原」と書いてありますよ。

石原さんのお店に枝豆が並んでいたら、

すぐに買ってください。すぐにですよ！！

後でとか言わないでください。

戻るころにはもうなくなっていますから。

この美しい枝豆を見てください！！！

あ、ビールも忘れずに♪

嬉しかった日 a happy day

Thank you for visiting and supporting my blog!!

So sorry I am not able to update posts frequently these days.

But something really happy happened!!

Someone told me that he has read my blog and
that he will be visiting Takayama soon!!

My blog do not introduce fancy places,
it consists mostly of tiny, minor spots that I personally liked and enjoyed.
Also, it is mostly of cultures and customs of what I find new to me,
so I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in these little things
except my family and friends.

Receiving a comment that someone whom I have never met before is enjoying my
blog definitely made my day!!

最近、更新頻度が落ちてしまい
申し訳なく思っております。

とっても嬉しい出来事がありました。

ある海外の方から連絡が入り
その方は、私のブログを覗いてくださり
そして間もなく高山を訪れてくださるのです！！

小さなことに主にスポットをあて、
私の個人的な好みばかりを並べたブログなわけですが
友人や家族以外の方にも楽しんでいただけているならば
そんな嬉しいことはありません。

と思いながらも

運動会 a sports day

I have written a bit about a "sports day" in Japan.  blog of Sept. 7

It was held yesterday at our school in Takayama
although we had a rather gloomy day.

The whole school had been divided into two big groups,
"team red" and "team white."
My son was in team red and my daughter, team white.

Since they were in different teams
we decided to simply have fun cheering everyone : )

The games and competitions in Takayama are
not much different from other schools I guess
but the part I love the most is the "cheering competition."

They probably spend longer practicing time here
and they have two different traditional cheering songs
that has been sung over a long period of time.

The traditional Japanese cheering style with
whistles and drums with a little bit of a modern touch
arranged by students from 5th and 6th grades
are soooo exciting to watch.

Even the tiny first graders in the first roles were
shouting and cheering in their loudest voice
to win the competition.

It is always fun, exciting and impressing to watch children
putting their utmost effort in winning each and every game.

昨日の高山はかなりどんよりとした一日でしたが、
無事にキッズの運動会が開催され、ホッとしているところです。

息子は赤組
娘は白組

どちらにも勝ってほしいので、
もうひたすら全ての競技を応援することだけに集中しました♪

高山の競技で一番大好きなのは
「応援合戦」です。

恐らく他の学校よりも随分長い時間をかけて
練習をするのでしょう。
こちらの「応援」の迫力と熱にとにかく胸を打たれます。

どれくらい古いのでしょうか、
長い間受け継がれてきた
「第一応援歌」と「第二応援歌」を
赤団も白団もそれぞれの応援合戦に
必ずその両方を組み込みます。
その際、前列に並ぶ、小さな一年生までもが
体を大きく揺らしながら、
出せる最大の声を出して応援する姿に
毎回涙が出てしまうんだな。

子供たちの「一生懸命な姿」は
いつ見ても感動的ですよね。

It is a dessert called "Iriko" in this region,
made of roasted barley powder paste!!

The woman who runs the shop told us
that it is called by other names in different regions.

My friend ordered it and she gave me some.
I could smell the nutty aroma of roasted barley
and it tasted so nice.

You will not only feel nostalgic from the atmosphere of the
tea shop but also from what they offer!!

前回の記事に載せた、チョコレートアイスクリームにしか見えない
このデザート、さて何だったのでしょうか。 →　すぎ

正解は、「いりこ」です。
いりこは、この地方の呼び名で
他には、はったい粉、麦焦がし、煎り麦、香煎と
様々な名前で呼ばれているそうです。
要するに、大麦を煎って挽いた粉をペースト状にしたものです。

友人がこれを頼み、私は味見をさせてもらいました。
大好きな味だーー。

すぎは、雰囲気だけでなく
「味覚」でもまた、タイムスリップしたような落ち着きを得られる素敵なお店です。

すぎ Sugi

On the way to Shiroyama-Park, a hiill where there used to be a castle,

there is a nice old tea place called "Sugi."

Walking South from the City Library,

you will find a gentle slope towards the Shiroyama-Park.

The slope becomes rather steep as you almost reach the park

and right at the spot where you want to take a rest,

there stands "Sugi" looking like it has just popped out of a folk tale.

I assure you that you will be able to spend the calmest moment
in this cozy tea shop.

If you want to escape from the touristic spot,
just take a walk towards the Shiroyama-Park and
you will find "Sugi."

The woman who runs the place told me that she
does not speak much English
but don't worry!!
She is willing to listen to you with her heart
and she will certainly understand what you want to order!!

城山公園へ続く道の途中に「茶処すぎ」はあります。

高山市図書館から南へ進むと、
まずはなだらかな坂道があり、
どんどんとその坂がきつくなってきます。
疲れた～、と音を上げそうになるその場所に
「すぎ」は、まるで昔話から飛び出してきたような佇まいで
おだやかにたっているのです。

静かなひとときをお過ごしになりたい方には
本当にオススメですよ。

町並みの人混みに疲れたら
城山方面に足を伸ばしてみてください。

「私、英語はできないんです」
とお店の方がおっしゃっていました。
「でも、なんとか分かり合えるものですね」
だそうです。

きちんと心で話を聞いてくださいます。

そんな心の会話を
楽しんでくださいな。

今年の気温 the temperature this year

My kids will be having a sports day in about a week.

In Japan, there is a sport event held at schools
in spring or autumn where the whole school is divided into
two teams (team red and team white) and compete against each
other through all kinds of field games.

Last year, we had it on the 5th of September.
You may think that it is too hot to hold a sport day
early in September but don't forget, it's Takayama here!!

This year, we're having it on the 17th
and we're so thankful that it is held two weeks later than last year.

It has been quite hot these days that we don't want to imagine
ourselves staying out under the boiling sun for the whole day.

I was looking at the temperature of the past years
and it said, the lowest temperature went 11 degrees (Celsius)
on the 11th of September last year.
Cooooooooold for early September.

We're having double the temperature this year compared to last year,
no wonder it's hot!!

約一週間後に、子供たちの運動会が開催されます。

昨年の運動会は9月5日でした。
9月の初めだなんて、暑そう～～なイメージですが、
さすが高山、適温で快適な運動会だったんです。

今年の開催は17日。
17日で本当に助かりました。

今年の残暑は予報通り厳しくて
同じ頃の開催だったらと考えると
ぞっとします。

ふと気になって、
過去の天気を調べてみたんです。
なんと、去年の9月11日、
最低気温が11℃ですって。
さ、さむい～～。

今朝の最低気温は20℃。
暑いわけだぁ。
